Idaho Steelheads News Release
Reel Rewind
The Idaho Steelheads opened the 2006-07 season in Long Beach on Friday night with a 2-1 win over the Ice Dogs. Veteran Scott Burt tallied Idaho's the first goal of the season. Charlie Johnson, making his professional debut, and Mike Gabinet each assisted on the tally. Derek Nesbitt found the basket to score the game-winning goal, with helpers coming from Cody Blanshan and team captain Marty Flichel.
The team traveled to Bakersfield on Saturday and rallied back from a two-goal deficit to score three goals in the third period. Johnson notched his first professional goal early in the final frame, set up by Kyle Bruce and Lance Galbraith. Flichel knotted the game, from Nesbitt and Greg Rallo. And, Galbraith potted the game-winner with help from Jon Hedberg and Johnson, as Idaho took the second game of the young season, 3-2.
Planes, Busses, and Boats
The team left Bakersfield this morning to fly into Seattle, then board busses to Vancouver, a ferry to Vancouver Island, and busses into Victoria where they'll sit idle until Wednesday night's contest. The teams, who faced off against one another in McCall, Idaho for two preseason games, will play a three-game series ending Saturday. Idaho won both preseason games, 4-2 and 8-1 respectively.
Opening Night Coat Drive
The Idaho Steelheads are teaming up with the Boise Rescue Mission, on Opening Night-November 3rd, to help people in need across the Treasure Valley. Fans who bring a new or gently-used coat - men's, women's and/or children's sizes - will receive a ticket to watch the Steelheads's Sunday afternoon game for Free. Thanks to Westco Martinizing and Dry Cleaning for providing their services to clean all donated coats.
Out of the Box
Idaho will have to play more disciplined hockey and stay out of the penalty box to keep winning games. The team racked up 33 infractions, totaling 69 minutes, in just two games. Luckily, Idaho's penalty-kill was effective, 3rd overall in the league, and they held their opponents to just 1-of-22 chances (LB 0-of-8 and BAK 1-of 13).
Between the Pipes
Goaltender Steve Silverthorn recorded two wins and turned away 67 shots to start his second pro season. The 25-year-old, who had a 2.90 goals-against-average and .901 save percentage in 40 games with Idaho last season, is boasting a 1.50 goals-against-average and .957 save percentage to start this year.
Worthy Accolades
Head coach Derek Laxdal nominated: Steve Silverthorn as Goalie of the Week (2-0-0), and Charlie Johnson (1g-2a) as Player of the Week. Silverthorn is a 2005 graduate of Colgate University, while Johnson is a 2006 graduate of Harvard University.
Gone Fishin'
Defenseman Jon Hedberg left the team today to pursue options in Europe.
Star Gazing
Both of Idaho's affiliates are off to great starts; the AHL Iowa Stars are currently 6-0-0, while the NHL Dallas Stars are 7-1-0.
