Cubs Homer Way to 8-3 Win in OKC Sunday

Oklahoma City - A grand slam by Jim Adduci in the sixth inning and three-run homer by Dixon Machado in the ninth inning sent the Iowa Cubs to an 8-3 win against the Oklahoma City Dodgers Sunday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The Dodgers scored first, but Iowa's fourth and fifth home runs of the series sent the Cubs to a 3-0 lead in the series between the teams. Oklahoma City has now lost a season-high five straight games.

The Dodgers (6-11) took the game's first lead in the second inning, scoring first in a game for the first time in five contests. Cameron Perkins hit his team-leading sixth double with one out and later scored on Paulo Orlando's RBI single into center field for a 1-0 Oklahoma City lead.

Iowa had a chance to tie the game in the fourth inning. Zach Borenstein drew a one-out walk before Trent Giambrone hit a double to deep center field. Borenstein attempted to score from first base on the play, but was thrown out at home plate by center fielder Orlando, shortstop Drew Jackson and catcher Josh Thole to preserve the Dodgers lead.

The Cubs (11-6) grabbed the lead in the sixth inning. Iowa loaded the bases with three straight walks by Dodgers reliever Josh Smoker before a sacrifice fly by Johnny Field tied the game, 1-1.

With runners at second and third base, Smoker intentionally walked Giambrone to load the bases for Adduci, who hit a grand slam to right-center field for a 5-1 Iowa advantage.

Oklahoma City's second run of the afternoon came in the eighth inning when Jake Peter hit a RBI double to deep center field to cut Iowa's lead to 5-2.

Iowa quickly answered in the top of the ninth inning as Machado hit a towering three-run homer out of the ballpark to left field to extend Iowa's lead to 8-2.

Matt Beaty led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a triple for the Dodgers before Connor Joe's sacrifice fly cut Iowa's lead to 8-3, but that would be Oklahoma City's final run of the day.

Iowa starting pitcher Duncan Robinson (1-1) picked up the win, holding the Dodgers to one run and four hits over 7.0 innings. He allowed one walk and recorded one strikeout. Dakota Mekkes was credited with his third save of the season.

Dodgers starting pitcher Brock Stewart pitched 5.0 scoreless innings, holding Iowa to three hits. He issued two walks and recorded three strikeouts. Josh Smoker (1-2) entered the game to pitch in the sixth inning and was charged with the loss, allowing five runs on one hit with four walks and one strikeout.

Oklahoma City has now allowed at least five runs in seven straight games for the first time since 2012 when the RedHawks did so during a 12-game stretch July 16-27 that season.

With Sunday's loss, Oklahoma City fell five games below .500 for the first time since the end of the 2011 season when they finished the season with a 68-75 record.

The Dodgers and Cubs wrap up their four-game series with a 7:05 p.m. game Monday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
