Reno Aces Game Notes
April 21, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release
Today's Game: There is no 10-run rule in the Pacific Coast League, but last night the Reno Aces flirted with the idea. Down by a score of 9-1, the Aces sent their second position player of the year to the hill looking for three outs. Travis Snider got those three outs, but allowed three runs to come across in the bottom of the 8th inning. This afternoon, Justin Donatella will look to shut down the high-powered El Paso lineup in his third career Triple-A start.
Roster Move: Jimmie Sherfy was recalled this morning from Triple-A Reno to Arizona.
Clarke Kent: Taylor Clarke was Superman yesterday in his Major League debut. He tossed three scoreless innings, struck out 2, and allowed one hit to earn a save. Additionally, he added a base hit in the top of the 8th inning off of Cubs pitcher Randy Rosario. He's the first pitcher with a base hit and a save in his @MLB debut since saves became an official stat in 1969. In total, Clarke took home game balls for his First MLB Pitch, First MLB strikeout, First MLB save, and First MLB hit. Clarke set an Aces franchise-high with 125 strikeouts in 2018. The last Aces player to make his MLB debut against the Chicago Cubs was Jack Reinheimer on 8/1/17.
Easter Egg:: Luscious Luke Easter played six years in the Major Leagues (1949-1954) with the Cleveland Indians. The right fielder/first baseman hit .274 in 491 games, slugged 93 career home runs and scored 256 runs.
Movie Buff: On this Day, 30 Years Ago: "Field Of Dreams" debuts. Top baseball movies at the box office (inflation adjusted): 1. League Of Their Own, $238M (1992) | 2. Field of Dreams, $172M (1989) | 3. Bad News Bears, $152M (1976) | 4. The Natural, $116M (1984) | 5. Bull Durham, $108M (1988).
Historic: On this date in 2012, Phillip Humber tossed baseball's twenty-first perfect game when he retired all 27 Mariners he faced in the White Sox' 4-0 victory at Safeco Field. The 29 year-old right-hander, who had Tommy John surgery in 2005, was the third Pale Hose pitcher to accomplish perfection, joining Mark Buehrle (2009 vs Tampa Bay) and Charles Robertson (1932 vs Detroit). The second perfect game in Major League history was accomplished on June 17, 1880 by John Montgomery Ward at the Messer Street Grounds. The game was caught by Emil Gross and umpired by Charles F. Daniels. Although Emil shares the same last name with bench coach Greg Gross, and both Gross' played in the Major Leagues, has not been confirmed that there is any relation.
Baseball Egg: According to Baseball Egg, Baseball for Eggheads these are the 5 best baseball players of all-time. Babe Ruth (182.5 WAR), Willie Mays (156.2 WAR), Ted Williams (123.1 WAR), Ty Cobb (151.0 WAR) and Hank Aaron (142.6 WAR). The only current active player to crack the top 50 is #48 Mike Trout (66.1 WAR).
Pass(over) the Babe: Albert Pujols was humbled after he caught and passed Babe Ruth for fifth place on baseball's career RBI chart. Pujols passed Ruth with an early RBI double and a late solo homer, but the Mariners added four more homers to their major league-leading total in a 6-5 victory over the Angels on Saturday night. Pujols tied Ruth when he drove in Andrelton Simmons in the third inning, and passed the Babe by hitting the third homer of his 19th big league season in the ninth. Pujols has 1,993 RBI, surpassing Ruth's total from the portion of his career after RBIs became an official statistic in 1920.
El Paso Easter: The Westside Community Church will have its 18th annual Easter Egg Hunt and Spring Bash from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Francisco Delgado Park, on Imperial Ridge behind Franklin High School. The event includes thousands of eggs, family activities including jumping balloon and face painting, appearance by the Easter Bunny and entertainment.
