Checkers to feature Teddy Bear toss at November 25 game
November 22, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers home game on the night after Thanksgiving is historically one of the team's heaviest attended of the season. Given the fact that Checkers fans are noted for their rabid enthusiasm for any event that betters the life of children - and the fact that the new arena will be filled to the rafters with fans, many of whom are new to the hockey experience - the team is openly and energetically urging all fans who attend the Friday night, 7:00 p.m., November 25th game to come "bearing" a new Teddy Bear of any size, color or style.
IT'S THE NIGHT OF THE ANNUAL TEDDY BEAR TOSS!
The rules are simple. As soon as the first Checkers goal is scored in the game, the horn will sound, the clock will stop, and the signal will be given for all fans who have brought Teddy Bears to the game to hurl their bears right toward center ice. As (hopefully) thousands of Teddy Bears come flying toward the rink, kids will be sent onto the ice to retrieve the precious cargo. The game will then continue but those thousands of wonderful bears will be boxed and ready for delivery to Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital in uptown Charlotte.
The deliverymen will be none other than Checkers players, coaches and top management, who will personally present each child in the hospital with his/her favorite Teddy Bear. The good news is that there will be enough bears left to put smiles on the faces of young patients at Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital for months and months to come.
Hockey is a sport for families and singles; for corporate groups and young people; for kids and adults of all ages, for sports fans and those who just occasionally want a taste of hockey, which is why the appeal of the Teddy Bear Toss is so universal. It's a simple project to execute, a relatively minor cost item, and the mental image of an ill child being able to cuddle a Teddy Bear paints a poignant picture.
