Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Nick Economakos' first professional goal gave the Bakersfield Condors a 2-1 lead heading into the third period, but Long Beach answered twice including an overtime game-winner by Christian Larrivee to give the Condors a 3-2 loss in front of 6,319 fans at Rabobank Arena.
Long Beach opened scoring as Christian Larrivee charged into the corner after a free puck and sent it to Cory Urquhart waiting in the slot. Urquhart tapped the feed under the left pad of Ryan Munce to give the Ice Dogs a 1-0 lead 5:17 lead into the first period.
After being outshot for most of the game, the Condors took matters into their own hands and launched an aggressive attack on Long Beach netminder Greg Hewitt. Kevin St. Jacques led a charge alongside linemates Sean Venedam and Eric Neilson and banked a second rebound underneath Hewitt, scoring the unassisted goal with 12:18 remaining in the second period to tie the game at 1-1.
Late in the frame, Bakersfield took the lead as Reagan Leslie was able to lead a charge on the left wing. Leslie was tied up on a wraparound attempt, but sent a soft shot off of the left pad of Hewitt towards trailing forward Nick Economakos, who slammed the puck over the left shoulder of Hewitt to give the Condors a 2-1 lead with one minute remaining in the second period.
With 12:43 left in regulation, Ryan Munce was caught with a free puck behind the net, which was cherry-picked by Mac Faulkner. Faulkner snuck the puck inside the post before Munce could return to the crease. The goal tied the game up at 2-2 and would send the game to overtime.
Just 35 seconds into the extra frame, Christian Larrivee brought a free puck through center ice and deked past the left side of Anders Olsson in the Condors slot. Larrivee would push a backhander past Munce to give Long Beach the 3-2 overtime victory.
Greg Hewitt picked up the victory, stopping 37 of 39 Condor shots. Ryan Munce was given the loss, despite a 35 save afternoon on 38 shots.
Other notes: With his goal, Kevin St. Jacques has scored a point in seven of his last eight games. Eric Neilson's assist was his first point as a professional. Nick Economakos' goal was the first of his career. The Condors lead the ECHL in overtime/shootout appearances with seven in 13 games. The game's 10:30am start was arranged to allow schools to schedule field trips to the game, where students could apply classroom skills to the sport of hockey.
The Condors return to action on Saturday, November 26th when they host the Fresno Falcons at 7:00pm. The evening will feature the Condors' annual Teddy Bear Toss, during which fans are encouraged to donate stuffed animals to Bakersfield charities by tossing them onto the ice after the first Condors goal. Last season, Condors fans donated over 7,000 plush toys and have contributed over 26,000 stuffed animals over the six-year history of the event.
