Louisville Bats News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - Randy Wynne was stellar on the bump with 6.0 shutout innings and the Louisville Bats' offense delivered some timely knocks to defeat the Columbus Clippers 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Huntington Park.
Wynne allowed and worked around base runners in each of the first three innings. He then opened the fourth with a leadoff double that may have spelled trouble, but the right-hander recorded three straight strikeouts to shut down the threat. Wynne cruised from there to retire the side in order in the fifth and sixth and finish his outing by retiring nine straight Clippers.
Wynne finished with 6.0 scoreless innings, five hits and six strikeouts to earn his first win of the season..
Consistency was key for the Bats offense, as they plated a run in each of the first three innings with a pair of RBI-knocks from Albert Almora Jr. and Alejo Lopez, and a solo homer from TJ Freidl that bounced off the right-field foul pole.
Allen Cordoba offered an insurance run with a homer of his own in the eighth -- a play that proved crucial down the stretch
A solo shot off the bat of Allen Cordoba in the top of the eighth inning gave Louisville some insurance and proved to be crucial down the stretch.
Gabriel Arias hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning that cut the lead to one, but a strikeout in the next at-bat from Bats reliever Fernando Cruz shut the door on the would-be comeback effort.
The Bats will have an opportunity at a series-split with a win over the Clippers on Sunday and first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Right-hander Graham Ashcraft (1-1, 1.04) will take the hill for Louisville, while lefty Adam Scott (1-0, 3.52) is slated to get the start for Columbus.
