Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (11-11) allowed two solo home runs in the ninth, falling by a score of 4-3 to the Indianapolis Indians (11-11), Saturday at Principal Park.
Robert Gsellman made his fourth consecutive start for Iowa, tossing 2.1 innings of one-run ball. He didn't allow a hit but walked three batters while striking out four. A ground out from Mason Martin drove in the first run of the game for Indianapolis, marking the fifth straight game the Indians scored first.
They added a second run in the third on an RBI single from Hunter Owen, taking a 2-0 lead. The game stayed there until the fifth, when Iowa got RBI singles from Greg Deichmann and P.J. Higgins surrounding a sacrifice fly from Brennen Davis.
Conner Menez and Cayne Ueckert kept Iowa's lead at 3-2, combining to strike out 10 batters over their 5.1 innings. Unfortunately for Iowa, Eric Stout allowed two solo home runs in the ninth inning to Canaan Smith and Brendt Citta, giving the Indians the lead back.
Cristofer Melendez walked one in the home half of the inning, but retired the final three hitters to take game five of the series, giving Indianapolis a 3-2 series lead.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- P.J. Higgins went 2-for-4 tonight, bringing his average on the year to .340, good for the team lead.
