ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints gave up two, five-run innings and were beat up by the Nashville Sounds 12-3 in a five inning rain shortened game on Saturday at CHS Field in front of 5,974.
For the third consecutive game the Sounds got on the board first with a long ball as Tyler White hit a first inning solo homer to left, his fifth of the season, making it 1-0.
The Sounds tacked on another run in the second when Mario Feliciano doubled with one out. Mark Mathias walked and, with two outs, Jonathan Davis made it 2-0 with an RBI single to center.
In the third, the Sounds put up a five spot to blow the game open. Brice Turang led off with a double to right-center. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Weston Wilson and Feliciano followed with back-to-back RBI singles putting the Saints in a 4-0 hole. Mark Mathias' double play groundout plated a run and Corey Ray finished the scoring with a two-run home run, his first of the season, increasing the lead to 7-0.
The Sounds continued to pour it on in the fourth as they loaded the bases to start the inning on three consecutive walks from reliever Drew Strotman. A fourth consecutive walk to Jon Singleton forced in a run making it 8-0. With two outs, Mathias hit a grand slam to right, his first homer of the season, putting the Sounds up 12-0.
The Saints made a little noise over the final two innings as Royce Lewis got the Saints on the board with a solo shot to left, his third of the season, to make it 12-1.
In the fifth Daniel Robertson led off with a walk and scored on a double by Derek Fisher getting the Saints to within 12-2. With one out, back-to-back walks loaded the bases and Jose Miranda's sacrifice fly got the Saints their final run.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the six-game series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Dereck Rodríguez (1-0, 0.77) to the mound against Sounds RHP Jason Alexander (3-1, 2.70). The game can be seen on 45TV and MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
