WORCESTER, M.A. - In a game that featured 16 runs, 18 hits and extra innings, the Buffalo Bisons (14-9) won a wild one, 9-7, over the Worcester Red Sox (12-11) at Polar Park on Saturday afternoon.

It was a 6-6 game entering the tenth, and Buffalo put runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the frame. Working against WooSox reliever Derek Holland, Samad Taylor cracked a pitch to the right centerfield gap-by the time it was retrieved, Taylor had a go-ahead two-run double and advanced to third on a throw home. During the next at-bat, Taylor stole home on a toss back to the pitcher, to extend the lead to 9-6 for the Bisons.

Minutes later, the bottom of the tenth made its bid for the craziest half inning of the day. Ryan Fitzgerald began it with an RBI bloop single to center, cutting the deficit to two. The next batter, Connor Wong, hit a looping liner to the hole on the left side-the shortstop, Eric Stamets, threw to second to force out Fitzgerald, and umpire Brian Walsh deemed the second baseman's foot stayed on the bag for the second out. Following the play, Fitzgerald and Worcester manager Chad Tracy were ejected while arguing the call. After an out, Buffalo went to the bullpen for closer Adrian Hernandez, who got a strikeout to end the ballgame, giving the road team a 3-2 edge in the series.

Hours earlier, both teams traded early runs. Buffalo scored on a first-inning sac-fly from Jordan Groshans and fourth-inning three-run double by Logan Warmoth.

Because of Groshans' hit, the WooSox trailed 1-0 before their first at-bats. But Jarren Duran led off the first with a double, then scored on a double down the right field line by Triston Casas. Duran and Casas led the way again in the third, an RBI triple from the speedy centerfielder and an RBI single by Casas. Then, down 4-3 in the fourth, Ronaldo Hernandez tied the game for Worcester with his first home run of the year, a 436-foot shot that banged off the batter's eye.

The teams traded runs again in the seventh, starting with a two-run single by Nick Podkul for the Bisons. The score was 6-4 when Jeter Downs stepped to the plate following a Duran walk, and Downs jumped on the first pitch he saw, smashing it over the left field wall for a game-tying long ball. The 23-year-old watched it fly, and when it landed on the berm, he had his fourth homer of the season.

The score remained 6-6 until the extra-inning slugfest, in large part thanks to a scoreless 1.1 innings from reliever Tyler Danish, returned from Boston on Friday.

Four of the five games this week have been decided by exactly two runs, the lone exception a one-run finish on Thursday night. On Saturday, Worcester's offense outhit Buffalo 11-7, paced by six extra-base-hits, which tied a season-high (April 16 vs. Lehigh Valley).

The WooSox conclude the six-game series versus the Buffalo Bisons on Sunday, a 1:05 start at Polar Park. On the mound, Darwinzon Hernandez makes his fifth start of the season, facing Andrew Bash. Radio coverage is live at 12:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network, while television coverage is live on NESN+.
