Winterhawks Earn 3-1 Win Over Chilliwack
January 10, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks had their entire roster back in the fold for the first time in several weeks, and earned a 3-1 win over the Chilliwack Bruins Saturday at the Rose Garden.
The Winterhawks struck early in the game on a great goal by Chris Francis at the 4:20 mark. Francis carried the puck over the blueline, froze a Chilliwack defenseman by winding up and faking a shot, sidestepped him and fired a laser high over Chilliwack netminder Lucas Gore's stick side. Portland extended their lead to 2-0 at the 11:46 mark when Joe Morrow brought the puck into the Bruins' zone and fired a slapshot from the point past Gore for his second goal of the season.
Chilliwack got one back in the second period on a goal by Kevin Sundher, who poked it in from the side of the net at the 9:37 mark to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Winterhawks came out pressing in the third, and with three minutes to go Nino Niederreiter sealed the win when he took a rebound on the right side, patiently skated across the middle to get a better look at the net, and snapped a shot past Gore to make it 3-1 and secure the win.
Ian Curtis was outstanding in net for Portland, stopping 32 of 33 Chilliwack shots. Gore made 28 saves on 31 Winterhawks shots for the Bruins.
Portland was playing with their full lineup for the first time in nearly a month, as Ty Rattie, Tyler Wotherspoon, Nino Niederreiter and Luke Walker were all making their first appearances after returning from international tournaments. Walker had also missed action previously due to a facial injury. Both Niederreiter and Walker were honored before the game for their accomplishments in the 2010 World Junior Championship.
The Winterhawks will now head out on a three-game road trip, beginning Wednesday in Kamloops. Their next home game is Wednesday, January 20 against the same Kamloops Blazers at the Memorial Coliseum.
