Wheaties Draft League High Five Manitobans

Edmonton, Alberta - A total of twenty-four Manitobans, including four from western Manitoba were chosen in Thursday's 21st Annual Western Hockey League Bantam Draft in Edmonton.

Leading the way was Winnipeg defenceman Madison Bowey, who went to the defending Western Hockey League Champion Kelowna Rockets with the first pick of the second round and 23rd overall. A 5'11" 168 lb defenceman, Bowey was generally considered the top Manitoban heading into the draft.

Bowey was the first of three Winnipeggers to be chosen in the first three rounds of the draft. Joining him were defenceman Paul Stoykewych, who went to the Portland Winter Hawks in round two (38th overall) and center Michael Lorange was chosen by Prince Albert in the third round (50th overall).

Two more Winnipeg born players were taken in round four - Cole DePape, by Kootenay (77th overall) and Saskatoon opted for Christian Stockl with the 86th overall pick.

Neepawa blueliner Nolan Speiss was the top western Manitoban to be selected, going to the Brandon Wheat Kings in the fifth round (109th overall).

Five other Manitobans went in the fifth round - Moose Jaw took forward Kurt Keats of Winnipeg with the 95th overall selection, Red Deer chose defenceman Kevin Pochuk (99th overall), Everett selected Geordie Maguire of Winnipeg (106th), Winnipeg goalkeeper Alex Moodie went to Saskatoon (108th overall) and the Calgary Hitmen chose Carberry's Daylan Creasy with the final pick (110th overall) of the fifth round.

In round six, Swift Current took Dufresne's Denis Bosc (121st overall) and the Moose Jaw Warriors drafted Stonewall forward Braydon MacDonald (124th overall).

In the seventh round, the Kootenay Ice chose Winnipeg's Jon Martin (135th overall) while St. Adolphe goalkeeper Austin Lutz was taken by the Everett Silvertips (150th overall).

Six Manitobans went in round eight, led by Winnipeg forward Remi Laurencelle, who was chosen 157th overall by the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The Wheat Kings followed that pick up by opting for center Daniel Taillefer from La Broquerie (158th overall). Rounding out the eighth round picks were Nolan Parrington of Winnipeg (159th, Regina), McCreary's Carter Zalluski (161st, Edmonton), Thompson netminder Justin Paulic (164th, Moose Jaw) and Winnipeg forward Nick Zajac (174th, Saskatoon).

Brandon chose Neepawa center Quinton Lisoway in the ninth round (180th overall) and St. Agathe product Mathew Hadley in the tenth (219th).

Rounding out the list of Manitobans chosen was Grunthal defenceman Gavin Froese (237th overall) by the Wheat Kings in the eleventh round.

Brandon led all WHL clubs, by selecting five Manitobans followed by Saskatoon and Moose Jaw with three each.
