Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC â The Charlotte Checkers came into Tuesday night's game against the Trenton Titans without a loss in the month of March, but also without a win against the Titans this season. Charlotte knew it was going to be a hard fought battle if they were going to overcome a tough Trenton team. Although the Checkers gained strength in the second and third periods, they were unable to best a Trenton offense that would not quit. The Titans dealt a 5-3 loss to the Checkers.
The Checkers found themselves down 3-0 after the first. The Titan's first goal was on a power play and came off a pass from Rosario Ruggeri to Leon Hayward at 9:27 of the period. Jarrett Thompson and Jeff Smith contributed a goal each to give Trenton a strong lead.
Charlotte started the second period with a change in goalie and a change in momentum. Kelly Guard kept the Titans at bay with six saves in the period. Charlotte left wing, Eddie Pershin, helped put the Checkers on the board when he slipped the puck to Jason Dawe at 9:56. It was Dawe's 15th goal on the season.
Charlotte continued their voracious pursuit in the third. Dusty Jamieson cleared the puck to Mike Wirll to put it past Trenton's goaltender, Andrew Allen, at 2:47. Brian Escobedo then received a pass from Wirll to edge Trenton 3-3. Charlotte's defense came through when Trenton had a two man advantage. They were able to kill the penalties without incident. Guard managed some great saves until 18:15 when Trenton's Hayward saw his second goal of the night. The Titans came away with a 5-3 victory after an empty net goal by Nick Deschenes.
The Checkers hit the road this Friday, March 18th to face the Pee Dee Pride for the eighth time this season. They return home to Cricket Arena Saturday, March 19th to face the Gwinnett Gladiators on Jimmy Buffet and Youth Jersey Night.
