Grrrowl acquire Colin Shields and Asheville duo
March 15, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Grrrowl News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - The Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL, proud affiliates of the Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers, have acquired forward COLIN SHIELDS from Atlantic City, while DAN PSZENYCZNY (D) and CHRIS KOVALCIK (F) have signed contracts with the Grrrowl.
The addition of Colin Shields from Atlantic City completes the trade for forward J.F. PLOURDE. The Grrrowl originally traded Plourde for defenseman TOM REIMANN last Thursday, however the ECHL voided that trade, resulting in the Grrrowl requesting and receiving Shields.
Selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Shields played three years for the University of Maine Black Bears. The 5-11, 176-pound native of Glasgow, Scotland was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie team in 2002 after tallying 29 goals and 17 assists. As a senior, Shields finished as Maine's leading scorer with 18 goals and 44 points, leading the Black Bears to the NCAA Championship game. Shields began his professional career earlier this season, playing 34 games with the ECHL's San Diego Gulls. He's played the last 19 games with Atlantic City, and has registered 18 points on six goals and 12 assists with the Bullies.
Pszenyczny and Kovalcik both come from the Asheville Aces of the SPHL. Pszenyczny has appeared in 50 games with Asheville this season, recording six goals and 26 assists with 25 PIMs. The 5-11, 185-pound native of Sterling Heights, MI has played professionally for teams in the UHL, WHA2 and SPHL. Kovalcik has split his time this season with SPHL clubs in Winston-Salem and Asheville, and in 45 games he has accumulated 221 penalty minutes with five goals and nine assists. Another Michigan native, Kovalcik stands 6-3 and weighs 220 pounds.
The Grrrowl next play Thursday in Florence, SC against the Pee Dee Pride. Greenville returns to the BI-LO Center March 18th for a 7:05 p.m. game against American Conference rival Florida.
