
Titans Fend Off Checkers 5-3

CHARLOTTE, NC (March 15, 2005) â Despite allowing the Charlotte Checkers to come back from a three-goal deficit, the Trenton Titans were able to pull away with a 5-3 victory at Cricket Arena
2,804 in attendance saw the Titans record three goals against the Checkers in the opening stanza for the second time this season. Leon Hayward drew first blood on the man-advantage with his thirteenth of the season at 8:29. Jarrett Thompson notched his first goal in a Titans' uniform to put the Titans up by two. A 3:05 later Jeff Smith also put the puck past Checkers goaltender Alex Westlund as the Titans staked a 3-0 lead after one.
With Kelly Guard coming in to relieve Westlund, Charlotte was able to get on the board at 9:56 of the second period with a power play goal by Bogdan Rudenko that cut the Titans' lead back to two goals.
The Checkers would continue to chip away the Titans' edge with a Mike Wirll goal 2:47 into the third period. Brian Escobedo then tied the game 3-3 when he put his own rebound past Andrew Allen at 8:30 of the final frame.
Hayward would give his team the lead once again as he registered his second marker of the game with just 1:45 left in regulation. Nick Deschenes put in the empty net goal to complete the scoring.
Allen turned away 24 of 27 saves for his twenty-first win of the season. Trenton was 1-for-8 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
