TinCaps Stay Perfect against Lansing
June 5, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Lansing, MI - On a chilly Wednesday night, the TinCaps defeated the Lansing Lugnuts, 8-5, in a back-and-forth series-opening contest. Fort Wayne fought back from deficits of 2-0 and 4-3 to improve to a season-best seven games over .500 and 7-0 against Lansing this season.
Brian Adams was the offensive leader for Fort Wayne (34-23), driving in three runs and going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple. Corey Adamson and Stephen Carmon each drove in a run, while the other three runs scored by the TinCaps were unearned.
Lansing (25-30) opened the game with three consecutive hits against Zach Eflin. The last of those three hits was a two-run double by Christian Lopes, which gave the Lugnuts the early edge. Carmon issued the Fort Wayne response with an RBI single in the top of the second, making it a 2-1 game.
The TinCaps scored two runs in the top of the fourth - one on a Brian Adams double to plate Adamson, and the other as Lansing shortstop Emilio Guerrero bobbled a two-out grounder, allowing Adams to score.
That 4-3 lead didn't hold long for Fort Wayne once Eflin left after the fifth inning. Reliever Matt Chabot, who had been warming during Eflin's rocky first, allowed two runs in the sixth, and Lansing re-took the lead, 5-4. Michael Kelly (2-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for the TinCaps, earning the victory.
The late innings saw the most action, as Adams' bat sparked a three-run eighth inning. After a throwing error by Lugnuts reliever Efrain Nieves brought Dane Phillips in to score, Adams laced a two-run, two-out triple to center field, putting the TinCaps ahead, 6-4. Lansing plated a run in the bottom of the eighth, making it 6-5, but Fort Wayne polished off the scoring with two in the ninth. Roman Madrid worked a four-out relief appearance, notching his eleventh save of the year.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM Thursday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. The scheduled starters are Bryan Rodriguez for Fort Wayne and Alonzo Gonzalez for Lansing. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
