COMSTOCK PARK, MI - On the day the Midwest League announced its all-star squad, one Great Lakes Loons representative had a three-hit effort while another had his worst outing of the year in an 8-3 victory for the West Michigan Whitecaps Wednesday night.

Right-handed pitchers Jharel Cotton and Carlos Frias and catcher Tyler Ogle were selected to represent the Eastern Division in this year's all-star game. Ogle went 3-for-4 with a walk in the game. But Frias (4-3) allowed a season-high six runs (all earned) over 5 1/3 innings to notch his third loss of the year and raise his ERA - which was second in the league entering the game - to 2.56.

Malcolm Holland also recorded a three-hit game for the Loons with one double.

The Loons took an early lead in the second. Corey Seager led off the frame with a triple down the right field line and scored on a ground out by Jeremy Rathjen.

But the Whitecaps took the lead in the fourth and never trailed from that point on when Jason King connected on a three-run home run off Frias.

Aaron Miller notched an RBI on a fielder's choice ground out in the fifth. West Michigan again answered, this time with a five-run sixth inning. A two-run double by Lance Durham sent Frias to the showers. Against the bullpen, the Whitecaps scored on a King single, a sac fly by Austin Schotts and an RBI single by Danry Vasquez.

In the seventh, Seager notched an RBI single but the Loons left the bases loaded in the inning.

King finished with three hits and four RBIs for West Michigan. Jordan John (4-3) won his second straight start against the Loons, allowing two runs on eight hits over 5 2/3.

The Loons (18-40) and Whitecaps (28-28) meet for the second game of a three-game series Thursday night at 7pm. Sixteen year-old left-hander Julio Urias (0-0, 1.35) is slated to make his third professional appearance for the Loons. Right-hander Yorfrank Lopez (6-2, 3.28) will represent his opponent on the mound. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM (WLUN) and online at Loons.com.

The Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
