
Kernels Use Fantastic Fourth to Pound Bandits

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels thrashed the Quad Cities River Bandits, 14-5, on Wednesday night. The decisive win to open a 6-game home stand means the team has increased their lead in the Midwest League Western Division over Quad Cities by 5 games.
The Kernels offensive explosion was highlighted by an historic 4th inning. The Kernels posted 10 runs on 12 hits in the frame as the first 9 batters recorded a hit and a total of 15 batters went to the plate. Michael Quesada, Candido Pimentel (twice), Byron Buxton, J.D. Williams, Jorge Polanco, Dalton Hicks, Adam Brett Walker, Travis Harrison, and Tyler Grimes all scored.
The inning was highlighted by doubles by Buxton, Hicks, and Walker which all pushed across a run apiece. Hicks and Walker's two-baggers were off the wall.
Aside from the 4th, manager Jake Mauer's club scored 2 in the 1st, 1 in the 5th, and 1 in the 6th.
Records were set for the most runs (10), hits (12), and plate appearances (15) in an inning. The previous highs were 8, 6, and 12, respectively. For the game, a season high was posted in hits with 21, doubles with 6, triples with 3, and consecutive hits with 9.
The Kernels were 12-for-24 with runners in scoring position. Every Kernel starter posted a hit and an RBI.
Reliever Alex Muren (4-0) earned the victory with 3.1 scoreless innings. The righty struck out 1 and allowed just 2 hits. Tim Atherton threw 1 scoreless inning following Muren, and Caleb Brewer threw 1 scoreless inning in his Kernels debut. Brewer was signed as a free agent by the Twins organization on Tuesday. Hein Robb made his second start of the season, throwing 3.2 innings.
For the River Bandits, Mitchell Lambson (2-3) took the loss. Lambson did not record an out, allowing 6 runs on 6 hits. Starter Jordan Jankowski threw 3-plus innings, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3.
