Snappers to Send Six to Dayton for 2013 All-Star Game
June 5, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - The Midwest League has announced the rosters for their 49th annual All-Star Game and the Beloit Snappers will have six representatives in the Mid-Summer Classic. The game is scheduled for June 18th, 2013 at Fifth Third Field in Dayton, Ohio.
The Beloit players who will be in uniform for the event are catcher Bruce Maxwell, third baseman Renato Nunez, first baseman Matt Olson, starting pitchers Raul Alcantara and Michael Ynoa and closer Ryan Dull. Maxwell and Nunez are among those who will be starting for the Western Division.
Nunez, who was ranked as the organization's No. 8 prospect before the season, will be manning the hot corner. The Valencia, Venezuela native currently ranks in the Midwest League top five in homers (11), slugging percentage (.531) and total bases (104). He also put together a team-high 12-game hitting streak in April. Right now, Nunez leads the Snappers in hits, homers, RBIs, extra base hits and slugging.
Bruce Maxwell will serve as the Western Division's starting backstop thanks to a first two months that have seen him develop into one of the MWL's most consistent hitters. He is leading all catchers in the Midwest League with a .303 batting average and tops the Snappers with a .372 on-base percentage. Maxwell entered the season as the Athletics' No. 15 prospect after being selected in the 2nd round of the 2012 draft out of Birmingham Southern College.
The first half of the season has given Matt Olson the chance to show off one the league's most powerful bats. A former first round draft pick from Parkview High School in Georgia, Olson leads the squad with 16 doubles and has tallied 23 extra base hits, good for second most, including seven homers. During the month of May, he led the team with 23 RBIs. At the beginning of the season, Olson was placed at No. 5 on the list of top prospects in the Oakland organization and his first half has done a lot to bolster that ranking.
Raul Alcantara is among the league leaders in wins, innings pitched and strikeout to walk ratio. Rated as the A's No. 11 prospect coming into the season, Alcantara has had three starts this year in which he's thrown at least six innings and allowed one hit and no walks. He currently leads his team in wins, strikeouts and WHIP. Alcantara hails from Barahona in the Dominican Republic and was signed by the Red Sox in 2009 before being traded to the Athletics after the 2011 season.
Despite not having been credited with a win thus far in 2013, Michael Ynoa has shown dominant stuff in limited innings for the Snappers. The 6-7 right-hander from Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic has posted a 2.52 ERA in 35.2 innings. He's also totaled at least one strikeout in every start this season. Originally signed by the A's on July 2nd, 2008, Ynoa didn't allow more than one run in any of his first nine starts in 2013 and had a 1.29 ERA in April.
Another Beloit arm that will be in the Western Division's arsenal is Ryan Dull, who has established himself as an elite closer. From Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Dull is tied for the Western Division lead in saves with nine and is in the midst of a 15.2 inning scoreless streak during which he's allowed five hits. He has struck out 31 and walked three in 21.2 innings. Ryan Dull was selected by the Athletics in the 32nd round of the 2012 draft out of UNC-Asheville.
The Bowling Green Hot Rods have the most representatives on the initial roster, totaling nine for the Eastern Division. Cedar Rapids paces the West with eight selections.
