Burlington Bees News Release

Sherman Johnson hit two solo home runs and Anthony Bemboom belted a two-run home run, but the Burlington Bees fell 8-6 to the Kane County Cougars on Wednesday night.

The Burlington Bees (22-31) continued its solid play offensively, scoring six runs on eight hits, with three home runs, but some poor pitching allowed the Kane County Cougars (26-30) to win the first game of the series.

Aaron Newcomb (1-4) failed to get out of the third inning, surrendering five runs on seven hits and two walks. The Cougars got on the board in the first on a two-run home run by Dan Vogelbach, scoring Albert Almora.

Sherman Johnson lifted a ball over the right field wall in the bottom of the inning for his first home run of the year.

Pierce Johnson (4-4) was given a 5-1 lead when the Cougars scored three more runs in the third. Newcomb surrendered a RBI single to Jeimer Candelario and Reggie Golden brought home two runs on a single.

The Bees refused to go away, scoring two unearned runs in the fourth. Chevy Clarke walked with two outs and the inning continued after Oliver Zapata dropped a fly ball hit by Chance Ross. Andrew Ray singled home Clarke and Anthony Bemboom brought home Ross on a single.

Johnson brought the Bees within one in the fifth, belting another ball over the left field wall, for his second home run of the night.

Kane County put two runs on the board to take a 7-4 lead in the sixth on a Marco Hernandez RBI triple that scored Carlos Escobar and a Zapata double that plated Hernnadez.

Bemboom made it a one-run game on a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be the last time the Bees would score on Wednesday night.

Felix Pena fired two scoreless innings to close out the game and pick up his first save of the year.

The Bees will send Ryan Crowley to the mound on Thursday night against Jose Rosario. Crowley will be making his first start since being named to the Midwest League all-star team on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Community Field.
