West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Midwest League announced on Monday that Jordan John has been named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the period lasting from May 27-June 2.
John becomes the first West Michigan Whitecaps player to win a Midwest League weekly award in 2013.
The 22-year-old left-hander earned the accolade on the strength of just one performance. On May 29 at Fifth Third Ballpark, John registered a career-high eight strikeouts and dealt six scoreless innings against the Great Lakes Loons. He allowed just four hits without issuing a walk and combined with Josh Turley to throw a five-hit shutout.
The Detroit Tigers' sixth-round pick out of the University of Oklahoma last summer, John has won each of his last three decisions to improve to 4-3 with a 3.24 ERA. His groundout-to-air out ratio is an exceptional 4.04 and he has allowed just one home run all season long. John has 39 strikeouts and 19 walks over 58.1 innings of work.
The Whitecaps continue an eight-game, six-day homestand at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night with the middle game of a three-game series against the Great Lakes Loons at Fifth Third Ballpark. RHP Yorfrank Lopez (6-2, 3.28) will take the mound for West Michigan opposite 16-year-old LHP Julio Urias (0-0, 1.35) of Great Lakes. In addition to a pre-game bobblehead doll giveaway, the Whitecaps will be wearing special jerseys for Irish Night and fans will be treated to food and beverage specials on an Altogas Thrifty Thursday. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
