Community Basket Event Change Announced

July 28, 2023 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA - The long running tradition of the Burlington Bees baseball team hosting Community Basket Day continues on Sunday, July 30, but it will have a bit of a different look this year.

Burlington General Manager Tad Lowary was informed by Prospect League Commissioner David Brauer Wednesday afternoon that the regularly scheduled game for Sunday, against the Thrillville Thrillbillies, was being cancelled.

Lowary explained, "A current Thrillville player, Ashton Smith, passed away suddenly this past Monday, and the Thrillbillies made a request to the league to cancel the game in order to allow his teammates and their staff to attend his funeral the thirtieth. The Burlington Bees organization is certainly sympathetic, understands, and will honor the request in the face of this tragedy."

Not wanting to disappoint its loyal fans, the Bees searched for an alternative opponent, however the Prospect League scheduling was full that day. With tradition, and a considerable amount of cash and prizes on the line, the Burlington staff has put together an alternative agenda of baseball events.

The Burlington faithful will be treated to a Sunday Fun Day Community Basket Extravaganza. Fans will get to witness a five inning "sandlot" exhibition inter-squad game among Bees players and coaches. That contest will be followed by a home run derby competition. Young fans are invited to bring their gloves and take the field to shag for the derby participants.

Burlington Baseball Association Board President Scott Zaiser knows the community will support the unfortunate change, given the terrible circumstances. "Bees fans have been here before and will always be here to support our local team, as well as one of our largest fund-raising charity events of the season. On behalf of the board, we would like to see fans come out Sunday to make this a positive day for both the Bees and the Thrillbillies."

Community Basket winners will be drawn throughout the events, with the final prize awarded at approximately 4 PM, after the home run contest. Winners must be present for the third prize of $2500 cash, as well as the basket and its content. First prize in the drawing is $5000. Second prize is another $2500.

General Admission for the day will be $5.00. As usual, children 5 years old and under enter the park for free. In addition, special drink pricing will be offered.

Gates will open at 1 PM. First pitch is at 2 PM. The homerun derby contest will begin at 3:20 PM.

Community Basket tickets will be available at the ballpark the day of the game until 2:30 PM.
