Stumpel, Brennan And Smithson Sign With The Kings

MANCHESTER, NH - The Los Angeles Kings, NHL affiliate of the Manchester Monarchs, have agreed to terms on a one-year contracts with center Jozef Stumpel, left wing Kip Brennan and center Jerred Smithson, Kings Senior Vice President/General Manager Dave Taylor announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreements were not announced. Stumpel, 30, played in 78 games with the Boston Bruins this past season - recording 51 points (14-37=51) and 12 penalty minutes - before being acquired by the Kings on June 20 with a seventh-round selection in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft (later transferred to Nashville) in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and a second-round choice in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Stumpel previously played for the Kings from 1997-2001 before being traded to the Bruins with Glen Murray for Jason Allison and Mikko Eloranta on October 24, 2001. In 271 games with the Kings, Stumpel had 230 points (68-162=230) and 104 penalty minutes. Originally selected by the Bruins in the second-round (40th overall) of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft, Stumpel was originally dealt to the Kings with Sandy Moger and a fourth-round selection (Kip Brennan) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft for Byron Dafoe and Dmitri Khristich on August 29, 1997.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound native of Nitra, Slovakia, has recorded at least 50 points in seven of his last eight NHL seasons and has appeared in 694 career NHL regular season games with the Kings and Bruins, registering 511 points (143-368=511) and 171 penalty minutes, including a career-high 79 points with the Kings during the 1997-98 season.

Brennan, 23, played in 19 games with the Kings this past season and recorded 57 penalty minutes. He also spent a portion of the 2002-03 season with the Monarchs, where in 35 regular season games he had five points (3-2=5) and a team-best 195 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-4, 228-pound native of Kingston, Ontario, was originally chosen by the Kings in the fourth-round (103rd overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He has played in 23 career NHL games, all with the Kings, and has 79 penalty minutes. He also played in three post-season games with the Monarchs this past season.

Smithson, 24, played in 22 games with the Kings this past season - including his NHL debut on December 29 at Colorado - and recorded two points (both assists) and 21 penalty minutes. He began the 2002-03 season with the Monarchs before being initially recalled by the Kings on December 27.

In 38 regular season games with the Monarchs, Smithson had 25 points (4-21=25), 60 penalty minutes and a club-best plus-16 plus/minus rating. The 6-foot-2, 197-pound native of Vernon, British Columbia, also participated in three playoff games with the Monarchs and recorded four penalty minutes. The Kings originally signed him as a free agent on February 18, 2000.

The Kings are scheduled to open their 2003-04 training camp on Thursday, September 11, at the HealthSouth Training Center in El Segundo. The first day of on-ice practice will be on Friday, September 12.
