July 31, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Barons News Release

CLEVELAND, OH- The Cleveland Barons today announced the first annual "Barons Hockey Fest", to take place on Saturday, August 23 from 12pm-6pm at IceLand USA in Strongsville. Michael T. Lehr, President of the Cleveland Barons, made the announcement.

Barons players already scheduled to attend the event include Niko Dimitrakos, Lynn Loyns, Robert Mulick and Yuri Moscevsky. Joining the Barons players will be Cleveland Hockey alumni from the old Barons, Crusaders, and Lumberjacks. Former Barons Bill Needham and Ian Cushenan have committed to the festivities along with former Crusader Bob Whidden and ex-Lumberjacks players Chris Longo and Perry Ganchar. All the players will be available to sign autographs, pose for photographs, and chat with attendees at the inaugural daylong event. Fans in attendance must supply their own camera. The alumni players will later skate in a "Cleveland Legends Hockey Game" scheduled for a 2:30pm start.

Joining the celebration of ice hockey in Cleveland will be Parma, Ohio native Brian Holzinger. The Pittsburgh Penguin forward is a former Hobey Baker (1995) winner at Bowling Green State University and is an eight-year NHL veteran. Holzinger is also expected to participate in the "Cleveland Legends Hockey Game".

Several other activities will be held on the ice as well. Featured in on-ice activities are the Ohio Flames, Ohio's Premier Women's Hockey Club, a Strongsville Mustangs Travel Team joined by the Barons coaching staff, and the Cleveland Junior A Barons. The on-ice action will culminate with a public open skate from 4-5pm. Cleveland hockey legend and Barons Fan Development and Youth Hockey Coordinator Jock Callander will be available to assist beginners during the public skate.

A wide range of interactive activities will be ongoing throughout the event. Commentator hopefuls will have the chance to call radio play-by-play for a hockey highlight. Fans can also engage in a roundtable talk with Barons officials and players. The Barons coaching staff will be on hand to break down the X's and O's in a coaching forum. In addition, hockey enthusiasts of all levels will be given the opportunity to partake in Hockey 101 hosted by Callander.

Kids will meet Cleveland Barons mascot SlapShark while learning about the inner-workings of a Zamboni, courtesy of Frank J. Zamboni & Co. Also, kids will learn the importance of safety on and off the ice-as an authentic Strongsville Police Department DARE car will be available for viewing.

The Barons will hold a raffle throughout the day. Fans will have the opportunity to win a variety of prizes that range from Chad Wiseman's authentic game-worn road jersey from the Barons inaugural season to Barons game tickets. Wiseman is the Barons all-time leading point-scorer. Fans in attendance will also have a chance to enter to win the authentic game-worn home jersey of Barons forward Yuri Moscevsky.

"As always, the Barons look forward to interacting on a personal level with fans in the Greater Cleveland community," said Lehr. "Barons Hockey Fest is extremely family-friendly and is the perfect forum for fans to get the up close and personal feel of Cleveland Barons hockey during the summer months."

Tickets for the Barons Hockey Fest will be $2 for adults, $1 for children and seniors, and free for both USA Hockey members and Barons season ticket holders.

Get ready for the Barons home opener live at Gund Arena on October 11th at 7:05pm. From a Full Season Ticket to a 3-game Hat Trick, every Barons ticket offer includes the home opener.
