WBS Penguins Announce 2003-04 Schedule

July 31, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will open their fifth American Hockey League season on Wednesday, October 8 against the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 p.m. at Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza. This marks the fourth consecutive season that the Penguins have opened the regular season at home and will also be the fourth year in a row that the AHL's regular season opens with a game in Wilkes-Barre.

After opening the season with two home games against the Admirals, the Penguins will play their first road game of the season on Friday, October 17 against the Syracuse Crunch. For the first time in team history, the Penguins will open and close the season at home. The Penguins' 80-game regular season schedule will conclude on Sunday, April 11 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 5:05 p.m. at Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.

The Penguins, who were aligned into the Eastern Conference's East Division along with Albany, Bridgeport, Hershey, Norfolk and Philadelphia, will play 68 of their 80 regular season games against Eastern Conference opponents, including 52 against their division rivals. During the upcoming season, the Penguins and new head coach Michel Therrien will play the River Rats six times (three home/three away); the Senators and Sound Tigers eight times (four home/four away); and their former South Division rivals, the Bears, Admirals and Phantoms ten times (five home/five away).

The home schedule features 28 weekend games, seven more than last season. A breakdown of the Penguins' home games by days of the week is as follows: Sunday, 4; Monday, 1; Tuesday; 1; Wednesday, 10; Thursday, 0; Friday, 11; and Saturday, 13.

The Penguins will play two games (one home/one away) against each of the seven teams in the Atlantic Division (Hartford, Lowell, Manchester, Providence, Springfield and Worcester), except Portland, who will play four games (two home/two away) against the Penguins.

The Penguins have two new opponents (Manchester and Toronto) on this year's schedule. The Penguins will make their first-ever visit to New Hampshire to play the Monarchs on Wednesday, February 7 at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Manchester will visit Wilkes-Barre for the first time on Wednesday, March 24.

In late February, the Penguins will travel to Toronto in their only visit of the season to play two games against the Roadrunners (Feb. 28-29) at RICOH Coliseum at Exhibition Place. The Roadrunners will visit Wilkes-Barre in early January.

The Penguins' longest homestand of the season lasts six games, which occurs twice during the season. The Penguins first six-game homestand begins on Wednesday, January 14 as they host the Roadrunners in their first-ever visit to Wilkes-Barre and concludes on Friday, Jan. 30, as the Bears make their second trip in a week to Wachovia Arena. The Penguins will also play Syracuse and Norfolk during the six-game, 17-day homestand.

In early February, the Penguins will play host Syracuse, Lowell, Toronto, Portland, Norfolk and Binghamton during a six-game, 11-day homestand. Following the homestand, the Penguins will leave for a seven-game road trip (Feb. 18-29), which is their longest of the season. During the trip, the Penguins will play games against Philadelphia, Albany, Syracuse (twice), Binghamton and Toronto (twice).

The Penguins will play 15 sets of back-to-back games this season, one fewer than they did last season. For the second straight season, the Penguins will have eight sets of three games in three nights on the schedule.

Overall, the Penguins will play 15 of the league's 27 other teams. The Penguins will not play Cleveland, Hamilton, Manitoba, Rochester, St. John's, Chicago, Cincinnati, Grand Rapids, Houston, Milwaukee, San Antonio and Utah during the regular season.

This season, all weekday evening games at Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza will start at 7:05 PM, except on Monday, February 17, when the Penguins will host the Binghamton Senators at 5:05 p.m. (Presidents' Day). All Saturday night games will begin at 7:05 PM and all Sunday games will start at 5:05 PM.

The Penguins will announce their complete preseason schedule next week. Individual game ticket information for preseason and regular season games will be announced at a later date.
