July 31, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hamilton Bulldogs News Release

Montreal Canadiens General Manager, Bob Gainey, and Assistant General Manager, André Savard, announced today the appointment of Doug Jarvis as Head Coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League. Jarvis, who succeeds Geoff Ward, becomes the fifth Head Coach in the Bulldogs’ history. The Canadiens also announced that Ron Wilson has been named assistant coach with the Bulldogs.

“It is with pride and enthusiasm that we welcome Doug Jarvis in the Montreal Canadiens hockey management group. Doug has extensive coaching experience and is widely recognized for his outstanding teaching skills at the NHL level. Before officially announcing his retirement as an active player, he was already involved in coaching back with the Hartford Whalers organization. During his 14-year stint with the Dallas Stars organization, he worked closely with young players. Doug’s success, perseverance and dedication as a player are essential qualities for the development of our young prospects,” commented Bob Gainey.

Doug Jarvis was an assistant coach with the Dallas Stars for 14 seasons from 1988 to 2002 (including the last five years of the franchise in Minnesota prior to moving to Dallas), which is one of the longest tenure for an assistant coach with the same NHL club. In Dallas, he won one Stanley Cup, took part in two more finals, won two PresidentsÂ’ trophies and five division titles. During his final season as a professional hockey player, back in 1987-88, he was a player-coach with the AHL Binghamton Whalers.

A Brantford, Ontario native, Jarvis played 13 seasons in the NHL with the Canadiens, the Washington Capitals and the Hartford Whalers. Selected 24th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1975 NHL Draft, he spent his first seven with the Montreal Canadiens, from 1975 to 1982, and was a member of the Stanley Cup Champion Canadiens in each of his first four seasons in the NHL, from 1975-76 to 1978-79. A highly respected player for his stellar defensive play, Jarvis was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 1984 as the NHLÂ’s best defensive forward. In 1987, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Trophy for his perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. JarvisÂ’ most significant milestone remains his NHL record of 962 consecutive regular season games. A model of consistency, he did not miss a single game throughout his entire NHL career from October 8, 1975 to October 10, 1987. During that amazing stretch he recorded 403 career points (13! 9 goals, 264 assists).

Born in Toronto, Wilson played for 14 seasons in the NHL with Winnipeg, St. Louis and Montreal, registering 326 points (110 goals, 216 assists) in 832 games. From 1996 to 2000, he was an assistant coach with the AHL Springfield Falcons, a position he held with the Saint John Flames in 2000-01 (winning the Calder Cup) and 2001-02, prior to taking over as head coach during the 2002-03 season.

“We are ecstatic with the announcement of Doug Jarvis as the head coach and Ron Wilson as the assistant coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs,” stated Hamilton Bulldogs President, Steve Katzman. “To be able to acquire two individuals of Doug and Ron’s caliber speaks volumes of the commitment the Montreal Canadiens have made towards the Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Club. On behalf of the organization, the ownership group and the fans of the Hamilton Bulldogs, we welcome Doug and Ron to Hamilton.”
