Amerks Open 48th Season at Home against Hamilton
July 31, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)...The Rochester Americans will open their 48th season of play in the American Hockey League at The Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester War Memorial on Friday, October 10th against the defending Eastern Conference champion Hamilton Bulldogs.
The 2003-04 season will be historic for the Amerks as it marks Rochester's 25th anniversary as the AHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres. As part of the new affiliation agreement with Buffalo, the Amerks will play at HSBC Arena in Buffalo on Sunday, February 29th against the Syracuse Crunch at 4:00 p.m. The last time Rochester played a regular season home game in Buffalo was on January 4, 1998 during the renovation of the Rochester War Memorial.
Buffalo will also in turn bring an NHL regular season game to Rochester for the first time in its history. The Sabres will host the 2003 Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils on Wednesday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester War Memorial.
The Amerks enter the season as a member of the Western Conference's North Division in the 28-team, two conference AHL. The division consists of the Syracuse Crunch, Cleveland Barons, Hamilton Bulldogs, Manitoba Moose, St. John's Maple Leafs and expansion Toronto Roadrunners. Last season, Rochester (31-30-14-5, 81 points) finished second in the Central Division behind the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The Amerks will play 56 games against divisional opponents this season, including 12 games against the Syracuse Crunch, and 10 games against Toronto and the Hamilton Bulldogs. Rochester will also play 10 games against the Western Conference's West Division. The West Division slate includes two games against the 2003 Calder Cup champion Houston Aeros.
During the 2003-04 season, the busiest schedule for the Amerks is in the month of February, as eight of the team's 12 games are at The Blue Cross Arena. In January, the Amerks play 15 games, the most in any month.
The majority of the team's home games are on Friday nights-- 20 to be exact. The Amerks will also play 10 games on Sundays and four on Saturdays, leaving only six games to be played Monday through Wednesday. The lone Monday night game of the season is on November 10th against the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks.
The schedule features two four-game road trips. In December, the Amerks tour Canada as they battle the Manitoba Moose from Dec. 5-6 and the St. John's Maple Leafs from Dec. 9-10. In January, Rochester plays four games in five nights against Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, Binghamton and Toronto from January 21-25.
The Amerks longest homestand during the 2003-04 campaign is five games from February 15-27 as St. John's, San Antonio, Syracuse, Albany and Hershey visit The Blue Cross Arena.
Amerks season tickets for the 2003-04 season are currently on sale at the Amerks Office in The Blue Cross Arena or by calling (585) 454-5335.
