Grand Rapids Griffins Announce Schedule
July 31, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins on Thursday released their schedule for the 2003-04 season, their second as the primary affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings and third as members of the American Hockey League.
The Griffins' 80-game schedule, which opens Oct. 11 at Chicago and concludes April 11 in San Antonio, features 13 different opponents, including two who will make their first trips to Van Andel Arena. The expansion Toronto Roadrunners will hightail it into Grand Rapids on Oct. 29 and March 17, while the St. John's Maple Leafs will make the 2,202-mile odyssey from Newfoundland for games on Dec. 6 and Jan. 17.
Grand Rapids' first home opponent will be its final foe from the 2003 playoffs, as the defending Calder Cup champion Houston Aeros will visit for the Griffins' eighth home opener on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Other special dates include the annual matinee game on Nov. 11 versus Houston, the traditional New Year's Eve celebration against Utah, and the home finale on April 9 versus San Antonio.
In between, the Griffins will face a home schedule that is both exciting and challenging. They'll host six different opponents from Jan. 14-24, comprising their longest homestand since the 1998-99 campaign. The Griffins will be home on both Friday and Saturday for three consecutive weekends during January, and they'll host contests on all four Fridays in February.
In all, Grand Rapids will play 15 home games on Fridays and 10 on Saturdays. A grueling gauntlet of seven games in nine days (Jan. 9-17) awaits the Griffins early in 2004, while February features 11 event nights at Van Andel Arena in a span of just 26 days, including the 2004 AHL All-Star Classic (Feb. 8-9).
The Griffins' home schedule is heavily concentrated between November and February, a result of playing seven of their first 10 games and eight of their final 12 contests in foreign territory. The team will sport a new look at Van Andel Arena this season, as all AHL and NHL teams will wear their dark jerseys on home ice.
Griffins full season, 25-game and 15-game ticket packages are currently available by calling (616) 774-4585 or (800) 2-HOCKEY. Single-game tickets will go on sale to the public in September.
The Griffins will welcome the NHL's future stars to Grand Rapids next winter for the 2004 AHL All-Star Classic. The two-day event at Van Andel Arena will consist of the AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Sunday, Feb. 8, followed by the AHL All-Star Game on Monday, Feb. 9. Tickets for both events, which are included in Griffins season ticket packages, will go on sale to the public later this summer.
