Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Barons 2003-2004 American Hockey League regular season schedule was released today, including 40 dates at Gund Arena. The Barons open their third campaign on Saturday, October 11th when they host the defending Eastern Conference Champion Hamilton Bulldogs at 7pm. Western Conference regular season champion, the Grand Rapids Griffins, will skate into town the following week on Friday, October 17th for a 7pm tilt. The Syracuse Crunch put an end to the home stand on Tuesday, October 21st with the first weekday matinee game in Barons history, a 10:30am start for "School Is Cool" day. The Barons schedule consists of eighty games, (40) at Gund Arena and (40) road games.
The home schedule features 27 weekend contests (11 Friday, 12 Saturday, 4 Sunday). Of the twelve Saturday home games, seven will have an early start time of 1pm. All four Sunday games will begin at 5pm. Aside from the "School Is Cool" day game, all other home games begin at 7pm. A total of 13 weekday games (4 Tuesday, 7 Wednesday, 2 Thursday) finish off the Barons home slate.
The Barons will play 78 of their 80 games against Western Conference opponents. Fifty of those games will be against North Division rivals (Hamilton, Manitoba, Rochester, St. John's, Syracuse, Toronto), including 10 games against Hamilton and eight versus each of the others. Twenty-eight games will be played against the West Division including eight versus intra-state rival Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and four against the defending Calder Cup champion Houston Aeros. The two games played outside the Western Conference will be against the Hershey Bears of the Eastern Division. As a whole the more than two-thirds (760 of 1,120) of the AHL schedule will feature games between division rivals.
The Barons will see opponents Toronto, Manitoba and St. John's for the first time with the new AHL alignment. The Toronto Roadrunners make their debut at Gund Arena on Friday, November 7th as the new affiliate for the Edmonton Oilers. The St. John's Maple Leafs venture to town on Friday, November 28th and Manitoba takes on the Barons at Gund Arena on Saturday, December 13th for the first of back-to-back games against the Moose.
Besides the teams the Barons have never faced, the boys in blue will also be seeing two new venues. The Houston Aeros welcome the Barons to the new Toyota Center, which the Aeros will share with the NBA's Rockets, on Friday, October 24th. The Ricoh Coliseum will house the expansion Toronto Roadrunners, who host the Barons for their first visit on Friday, November 21st.
The longest home stand of the year for the Barons will be four games, which they will do on three separate occasions. Two four-game home stands will highlight the month of December while the other takes place in March. The longest road stretch of the year is six games January 4th through the 18th (Syracuse, Hamilton, Grand Rapids, Rochester, Syracuse, Hershey). The Barons will play five consecutive road games three times during the season.
Whereas the NHL never plays three-games-in-three-nights, it is quite common at the AHL level to play the riggers of three games in as many days. This season the Barons will play three-in-three 12 times and will partake in four-games-in-five-nights a total of six times.
This season all home teams will be wearing their dark-colored jerseys. The Grand Rapids Griffins and the city of Grand Rapids will host the 2004 AHL All-Star Classic at Van Andel Arena on February 8th & 9th.
