Stingrays Ride Strong Start, Lucky Bounces, To 5-1 Victory

South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - Three goals in the first period, by Matt Reid, Marty Guerin and Grant McNeill, paced the South Carolina Stingrays as they went on to defeat the Augusta Lynx at the North Charleston Coliseum 5-1.
"I was worried that there would be a let down after the long trip," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But I couldn't have been more wrong. The guys came out strong and played well from the start."
In the first period the Stingrays played very opportunistic hockey. Their first goal came on the power play when Matt W. Reid went five-hole on goaltender Bobby Goepfert, sneaking it between his legs for his 13th goal to make it 1-0. The goal came at 10:28 and was assisted by Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Marty Guerin. They would get another power play goal when Guerin would pot his 9th goal of the season from Cail MacLean and O'Brien at 15:04. Just 32 seconds later they would make it 3-0 on Grant McNeil's 2nd goal of the season from Phil Gianfrancesco and O'Brien at 15:36.
The second period the Rays continued to apply the pressure, and continued to get fortuitous bounces. Morin got his 17th goal of the season at 4:01 from Guerin and MacLean to increase the lead to four goals. Defenseman Scott Romfo got into the action with one minute left to go in the period to make the lead 5-0. Romfo got his 5th goal of the season from MacLean and Morin at 19:00.
In the third period the Lynx got on the board with a late tally by Aaron Slattengren to make it 5-1, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 33 of the 34 shots that he faced. The losing goaltender was Bobby Goepfert who stopped 26 of the 31 shots he faced. The Stingrays went two for five on the power play while killing off all six of their short handed situations.
The South Carolina Stingrays will be back in action this Friday night when they welcome in the Gwinnett Gladiators to the North Charleston Coliseum. Friday is the Saturn Special Olympics night where you can win a used car.
