Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - General manager and head coach of the Charlotte Checkers, Derek Wilkinson, announced today that the team has signed forward, Ryan Gibbons.

Gibbons, 6-foot-5, 212 pounds, is a five-year product of the Western Hockey League's Seattle Thunderbirds. The hulking forward played last season with the Johnstown Chiefs where he accumulated 12 points (four goals, eight assists) and 38 penalty minutes in 57 games. Gibbons signed with the Checkers in the off season but required hip surgery. He has re-signed with the team and is expected to be in the lineup this weekend.

The Checkers began their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on Jan. 17 against the Gwinnett Gladiators. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $175.
