Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV - Curtis Darling put together his second 40+ save performance in as many games but it was not enough as the Trenton Devils (15-19-1-2=33)squeaked past the Wheeling Nailers (13-21-2-2=30) 3-2 on Tuesday night at WesBanco Arena.

The loss stopped the Nailers season-long unbeaten streak at five and their winning streak at four. It was the first regulation loss for Wheeling under new head coach Greg Puhalski since he took over on Jan 2.

The game remained scoreless until the final period of play with Darling making 25 saves through the first two periods while Dave Caruso made 19 of his own.

Matt Rogers broke the stalemate at 7:43 of the third period with the eventual game-winning goal. He walked the puck out of the corner, slamming a shot into Darling's pad at short range before corralling the rebound home for his fifth of the year. Jim Henkel and Tony Zancanaro assisted on the play.

As Wheeling pulled Darling for the extra attacker in the final minutes, it was Rogers again who found the net. He beat out an icing and slid the puck home from a tough angle at 18:56 to finish off the Nailers.

In all, Darling made 42 saves and was named the Ogden Newspapers No. 3 Star of the Game. He is now 2-0-1 as a Nailer. Caruso stopped all 30 shots to earn his second shutout of the season.

The Nailers return to action this weekend with a pair of games with the Elmira Jackals on the road. Faceoff is set 7:35pm on both Friday and Saturday.
