Stars sink Wolves in shootout

Chicago, IL - The Texas Stars (41-24-3-4, 89 Points) defeated the Chicago Wolves (45-20-1-6, 97 points) 4-3 in a shootout on Friday night in front of 7,415 fans at the Allstate Arena. Texas center Warren Peters tallied the decisive goal in the shootout, scored twice in regulation and added an assist to the lead the Stars to victory. Texas goalie Brent Krahn (15-3-0) stopped four of five attempts and the shootout and stopped 20 Chicago shots in regulation for the victory. Wolves' goalie Peter Mannino (23-3-1) made 34 saves in regulation and he stopped three of five in the shootout loss. Forward Ray Sawada tied the game with 3:23 left to force overtime and the eventual shootout. Texas defenseman Garrett Stafford dished out two assists, as the Stars road record moved to 19-13-2-2. Texas saw its magic number to clinch a playoff spot drop to four points after Peoria lost 4-3 at Rockford on Friday night. The Stars will play Saturday night in Grand Rapids against the Griffins at 6:00 PM (CST)

After a scoreless first period, the Stars opened the scoring at 4:35 of the second period. Center Warren Peters snapped a shot from the right-wing corner that deflected off the pads of Chicago goalie Peter Mannino for a power-play tally and a 1-0 Stars lead. Forward Sergei Korostin and defenseman Garrett Stafford set up Peters' 16th goal of the year. Texas made it 2-0 at 11:03 of the middle period on Peters' second goal of the night. Defenseman Dan Jancevski snapped a pass through the neutral zone that sprung Peters on a breakaway. The Stars center rifled a wrist shot over the glove of Mannino for his 17th goal of the year. Chicago trimmed the Texas leads to 2-1 at 14:07 of the second period. Left wing Andrew Kozek ripped a wrist shot over the glove of Texas goalie Brent Krahn for his 11th goal of the season.

In the third period, Chicago tied the game 2-2 after Matt Anderson found Paul Postma in the Texas slot. Postma sent a wrist shot past the glove of Brent Krahn for his 12th goal of the year just 1:42 into the final frame. The Wolves took a 3-2 lead at 11:14 after Jason Krog fed the puck to Anderson in the Stars crease. Anderson snapped a wrist shot past Krahn for his 14th goal of the season and a 3-2 Wolves lead. Stars winger Ray Sawada tipped in a rebound with 3:23 left in the final period to tie the game 3-3. Sawada's seventh goal of the season came off a Peters shot that banked off the end boards and landed in the Chicago crease at 16:37.

The two teams skated to a scoreless overtime, forcing a shootout. Stars forwards Colton Sceviour and Warren Peters each scored in the shootout. Wolves forward Joey Crabb scored in the shootout loss. Texas goalie Brent Krahn stopped four of five for the shootout win and Chicago goalie Peter Mannino stopped three of five for the shootout defeat.

Texas will continue its seven-game road trip in Grand Rapids on Saturday, March 27th at 6:00 PM (CST). Texas returns home for the State Farm Lone Star Face-off at Cedar Park Center, starting on Friday, April 2nd as the Stars take on the San Antonio Rampage at 7:00 PM. The first 3,000 fans will receive a Texas Stars puck, compliments of Cedar Park Regional Medical Center. Also on Friday, Cedar Park Center will provide $2.00 domestic drafts and $1.00 hot dogs. The State Farm Lone Star Face-off continues on Saturday, April 3rd when they host the Houston Aeros at 7:00 PM. The first 2,000 fans receive a Texas Stars camouflage hat. Also, fans may purchase the State Farm Lone Star Family Four Pack, which includes four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for $44.

State Farm and the Texas Stars will televise the State Farm Lone Star Face-off on Saturday, April 3rd at 7:00 PM on FSN Southwest. All games can be heard on the Stars flagship station ESPNAustin 104.9 FM "The Horn" or ESPNAustin 1530-AM.
