Wolves fall to Texas in 4-3 shootout

ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves let a 3-2 lead slip away with 3:23 left in the third period and went on to lose in a shootout, 4-3, to the Texas Stars at the Allstate Arena Friday night.
Chicago (45-20-1-6) sits in first place in the West Division and holds an eight-point edge on second-place Texas (41-24-3-4), who they will match up with again at the Allstate Arena on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Wolves, who already have clinched a playoff spot, are now four points shy of clinching home ice for the first two games of the West Division Semifinal.
Right wing Joey Crabb was the only Wolves player to score in the shootout, while goaltender Peter Mannino stopped three of the Stars five attempts. The loss snapped a career-high 15-game winning streak for Mannino (23-3-1), who posted 34 saves in regulation and overtime.
"They outplayed us and outworked us for most of the game," said Wolves Head Coach Don Lever. "I thought we played very well in the third period but then we made one mistake, they got a lucky bounce off the wall and it was in our net."
Texas opened scoring, 4:25 into the second period with a power-play tally from center Warren Peters. The forward fired a shot from low in the zone near the right face-off circle, which found its way through traffic and skipped between Mannino's legs.
The Stars took a 2-0 lead at 11:03 of the second frame when defenseman Dan Jancevski sprung Peters out on a breakaway and the center fired a shot through Mannino.
Chicago pulled within one, 2-1, with a tally from left wing Andrew Kozek at 14:07 of the middle frame. Kozek took a pass from Craig Weller high in the zone, walked in and cranked a long shot that sailed over Texas goaltender Brent Krahn's shoulder into the top right corner of the net.
The Wolves tied it up, 2-2, 1:42 into the third period. Defenseman Paul Postma took a pass from center Matt Anderson in the slot and hammered a shot straight past Krahn.
Anderson gave Chicago a 3-2 lead at 11:14 of the third period. Center Jason Krog shipped a pass across the ice to Anderson in the top of the slot and Anderson wound up and pounded a shot by Krahn, high, glove-side.
Krahn (15-3-0) made 20 saves for Texas in regulation and overtime, and stopped four of five Chicago attempts in the shootout.
The Stars scored the equalizer to make the score 3-3 with 3:23 left in the third period when Peters flung a shot wide of the net which bounced off the boards and landed near the crease, where Raymond Sawada reached out and swept it over the goal line.
The Wolves visit the Rockford MetroCentre tomorrow for a battle with the Rockford IceHogs at 7 p.m.
