December 2, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Greenville, SC Matt Reid's short handed goal in the second period proved to be the game winner and Maxime Daigneault made 31 saves to give the Stingrays their fourth win in five games 2-1 over first place Greenville Grrrowl. With the victory the Rays improved to 6-9-5, while the Grrrowl fell to 10-6-1.
The Stingrays scored the game's first goal at 2:02 of the first period, when Evan Schwabe netted his second goal of the season on a power play. Schwabe walked out of the right corner and slipped a wrist shot between the legs of Mike Brodeur to give the Rays 1-0 lead.
Matt Reid gave the Stingrays a 2-0 lead in the second period when Deryk Engelland gave him a break away pass and he beat Brodeur with a backhand move. It was Reid's fourth goal of the season and his first short handed goal of the campaign.
"Matt's goal was big for us in the second," commented Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons. "We need our penalty kill to step things up for us and it having Matt back has really helped."
In the third period Mike Knight made things interesting with a rebound goal past Daigneault at 13:12.
Maxime Daigneault has now won in his last four appearances to improve his record ot 6-7-3 on the season.
"We aren't going to go very far if we don't get some good goaltending from Maxime," added Fitzsimmons. "He has really started to play well for us in the last two weeks. It gives everyone confidence knowing that he is going to be able to come up with a big save for us."
The Stingrays and the Grrrowl will match up tonight at the Coliseum for Salvation Army and Debbie's Kids Teddy Bear Toss Night! Fans are encouraged to bring a stuffed toy to the game to throw on the ice after the Stingrays first goal.
