RoadRunners Swap Hill and Gaustad To Augusta
December 2, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Phoenix RoadRunners News Release
Phoenix, Ariz. - The Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL have acquired defenseman Shaun Fisher and forward Jake Riddle from the Augusta Lynx in exchange for defenseman Ed Hill and center B.J. Gaustad.
"Based on our performance over the first five weeks of the season, we were not moving in the direction that I had anticipated at the beginning of the year, and it was time to make some changes and inject some new blood into this team," said RoadRunners General Manager and Head Coach Ron Filion. "You're always going to have to give up something when you want to improve your club, and in this case the price was Ed and B.J."
Fisher, 26, leads all Augusta defensemen in scoring with three goals and eight points through 12 games. The Detroit, Mich. native and five-year professional tallied a career-high 11 goals and 33 points, and finished with a team-high plus-27 rating in 65 games last season with the Kalamazoo Wings of the United Hockey League. Prior to the 2004-05 season, Fisher spent the first three years of his professional career in the ECHL with Florida, Greenville, Trenton, Texas, and Roanoke. Fisher played his junior hockey with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League and ranked first among Plymouth defensemen in scoring in 1999-00 with 17 goals and 66 points in 59 games. He has 25 goals and 96 points in 234 career games.
Riddle, 22, has one goal, six points, and 36 penalty minutes in 12 games with Augusta, and has appeared in six games without a point for the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League. The Minneapolis, Minn. native and second-year professional recorded 12 goals, 26 points, and 128 penalty minutes in 56 games as a rookie last year with the Peoria Rivermen and Wheeling Nailers. Riddle spent his entire junior hockey career in the Western Hockey League where he collected 79 goals, 166 points, and 564 penalty minutes in 274 games over four seasons. He is a former eighth-round draft choice of the Minnesota Wild at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
"Shaun is a solid defenseman and good on both sides of the puck, while Jake is a grinder who works hard to make the most of his opportunities," said Filion. "Both players are very excited to come here and I know that both will bring a strong passion to the game."
Hill leaves the RoadRunners with 12 assists in 12 games, while Gaustad tallied five goals and 11 points in 16 contests.
Hey RoadRunners' fans, do you want to own a piece of history? The commemorative vintage jerseys the RoadRunners wore in last Saturday's game against Long Beach to celebrate the 1977-78 squad that advanced to the Pacific Hockey League Championship, are now available for purchase through a special online auction that can be accessed at www.phxroadrunners.com. The auction will run through Thursday, December 15 with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the ECHL/Salvation Army Hurricane Relief Fund.
Phoenix will travel to Long Beach to open a four-game road trip against the Ice Dogs at 6PM MST on Sunday. Catch all the action live on News-Talk Radio 1100AM KFNX and online at www.phxroadrunners.com through Pro Sports Radio beginning with "RoadRunners Countdown" at 5:40PM.
The RoadRunners, in conjunction with the Maricopa County Head Start Program, will host the first annual "Teddy Bear Toss" at 7:11PM on Friday, December 16 when Phoenix entertains the Bakersfield Condors at America West Arena. Bring a teddy bear with you to the game and toss it onto the ice when the RoadRunners score their first goal. All teddy bears collected will be donated to Head Start just in time for the holiday season. Stuffington Bear Factory will also be at the game selling teddy bears for $5.
