2,000 Coats Collected for Local Families

December 2, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. - This past Wednesday, the Condors collected 2,000 coats for local use with the Project Warm Families coat drive and $1,200 in donations for hurricane victims.

Sponsored by KGET-TV 17, News Radio 970 KGET and Barber Honda, the coat drive is the longest tenured collection event in the history of the organization. The event, which dates back to the Bakersfield Fog, has seen the collection of more than 16,000 coats. This season, 2,000 more jackets were donated to help warm the winter months for the less fortunate in Kern County. Once again, Junior Achievement partnered with the Condors and arranged distribution to several local agencies.

Also at Wednesday's game, fans had a chance to get up close and personal with the most famous trophy in sports, the Stanley Cup. The Cup is currently on an NHL/ECHL tour raising money for the two teams in the ECHL that were forced to take a year suspension due to damage caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Condors fans made $1,200 in donations on that night alone, and the Condors continue to raise money through the sales of professional pictures that fans can order to commemorate the occasion.

Beginning one hour before the game, fans were able to have their picture taken with the Stanley Cup by Michael Duffy photography. Starting today through January 31, 2006, all pictures will be posted online and fans can order as many prints as they like for an additional charge. Specific instructions and photo pricing can be found on the Condors webpage, www.bakersfieldcondors.com.

All proceeds from the picture orders will be added to the donations collected and sent to the relief fund for the Mississippi Sea Wolves and the Texas Wildcatters. Raising money for charity is nothing new for Lord Stanley's trophy, which has raised over $4 million for non-profit agencies in the past 3 seasons alone.

The Condors look to finish off 2005 with another surge of goodwill as they host the Condors Fighting Cancer Hockey-thon. 27 straight hours of hockey will be played beginning with the Condors game Friday, December 30th. The event will include a Condors Legends game prior to the Condors home game on Saturday, December 31st. For more information on Condors Fighting Cancer contact the Community Relations Department at Bakersfield Sports Entertainment at 324-PUCK (7825).
