Platt Is 278th ECHL Player To Play In NHL

PRINCETON, N.J. - Geoff Platt made his National Hockey League debut with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday to become the 278th player to play in the NHL after playing in the ECHL and the 22nd former ECHL player to play his first NHL game in 2005-06. Platt had four shots, won six of 10 faceoffs and had two penalty minutes in the Blue Jackets 4-1 loss at St. Louis.

The 20-year-old signed with Dayton in August, but began the season with Syracuse of the American Hockey League where he had 23 points (14g-9a) and 10 penalty minutes in 19 games before being called up to Columbus. He turned professional after completing his junior career in 2004-05 and had two assists in two regular season games and played in all three Kelly Cup Playoff games for Atlantic City.

Platt finished second in the Ontario Hockey League with 45 goals while ranking 12th with 79 points in 68 games. He scored a goal and had two assists for the Western Conference in the 2005 OHL All-Star Game. The 5-9 and 171-pound Platt played four seasons in the OHL with Erie, Saginaw and North Bay, scoring 192 points (106g-86a) in 248 regular season games and 10 points (9g-1a) in 14 playoff games.

The Premier 'AA' Hockey League has affiliations with 25 of the 30 teams in the NHL and there are 101 players on ECHL rosters under contract to teams in the National Hockey League. There is one head coach, 12 assistant coaches, 13 referees and five linesmen working in the NHL in 2005-06 who have ECHL experience. There have been 22 players in 2005-06 that have made their first NHL appearance since playing in the ECHL: Evgeny Artyukhin (Tampa Bay on Oct. 20), Adam Berkhoel (Atlanta on Oct. 15), Derek Boogaard (Minnesota on Oct. 5), Kevin Colley (New York Islanders on Oct. 27), Brian Eklund (Tampa Bay on Nov. 8), Michael Garnett (Atlanta on Oct. 12), Trevor Gillies (Anaheim on Nov. 6), Steven Goertzen (Columbus on Oct. 21), Jeff Giuliano (Los Angeles on Nov. 5), Timo Helbling (Tampa Bay on Oct. 5), Colin Hemingway (St. Louis on Oct. 19), Raitis Ivanans (Montreal on Oct. 8), Greg Jacina (Florida on Nov. 12), Zenon Konopka (Anaheim on Oct. 30), Jay Leach (Boston on Nov. 5), Mike Morrison (Edmonton on Nov. 7), Michel Ouellet (Pittsburgh on Nov. 22), George Parros (Los Angeles on Oct. 5), Geoff Platt (Columbus on Dec. 2), Nolan Schaefer (San Jose on Oct. 26), Martin St. Pierre (Chicago on Nov. 4), and Mark Streit (Montreal on Oct. 8).
