Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Five players enjoyed multiple-point nights and Matt Underhill stopped all 25 shots he faced as the Alaska Aces shut out the Long Beach Ice Dogs 5-0 Friday night at Long Beach Arena.
Alaska owned the first two shifts of the hockey game and grabbed a 1-0 edge when Ryan Gaucher whipped a wrist shot by Long Beach starter Greg Hewitt for his third goal in as many games at 1:33. The Ice Dogs (8-8-2) actually out-shot the Aces 11-4 in the first period, but failed to capitalize on three power play opportunities and fell further behind when Justin Maiser banged in a rebound with 2:45 left in the frame for his first goal of the season.
Alaska (12-3-2) started to truly dominate in the second period, holding an 18-4 advantage in shots on goal and pushing the margin out to 4-0 on goals by Mike Scott at 6:41 and Barrett Heisten at 10:01. Rookie Alex Leavitt set up Scott's goal, his second assist of the game, while Heisten's team-leading 11th of the year puts him among the top five ECHL snipers.
Cam Keith capped the scoring just 3:13 into the final period, assisted by Heisten and Peter Metcalf, who also finished with two helpers. Aces goalie Matt Underhill had little trouble preserving his first shutout in an Alaska sweater, posting 25 saves. His last shutout actually had come while he was in Providence (AHL), recording 16 saves in another 5-0 victory.
Alaska and Long Beach meet again tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m., then the Aces bus to Fresno for a date with the Falcons at the Save-Mart Center Sunday at 4:00 p.m. ADT. All Aces games, home and away, are broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com. In addition, all home games and selected road contests will be available on a pay-per-view basis on the internet, courtesy of B2 Networks.
