Florida Everblades News Release

ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (10-6-0) won their seventh straight home game with the help of two goals in the final 4.2 seconds of the second period to knock off the Gwinnett Gladiators 6-4 on Friday night at Germain Arena.

After the Everblades squandered a 3-0 lead to allow Gwinnett (8-4-2) to tie the game at four midway through the second period, Kevin Bergin and Paul Cabana scored 3.2 seconds apart at the end of the frame to grab the momentum back and send the crowd of 5,373 into a frenzy.

Bergin's goal with 4.2 seconds left in the period was his third of the night and came with the Everblades on the power play after a 5-minute major was given to Gwinnett's Adam Smyth for spearing. On the ensuing face-off, Cabana skated down the right wing and blasted a shot past Gwinnett goaltender Sean Fields just as the period expired.

The game started strong for the Everblades picking up a pair of first period goals by John Ronan and Bergin. Less than a minute into the second period Bergin notched his second goal of the night giving the Everblades a seemingly comfortable 3-0 lead. However the Gladiators battled back with an even strength goal by Smyth at 3:22 and a power play goal by Derek Nesbitt at 10:54 to cut the Florida lead to one.

The Everblades regained their two-goal advantage at 12:03 of the second period when Chris Lee tallied a power play goal with a slap shot from the blue line, but the Everblades lead was cut to 4-3 just seven seconds later when Pascal Pelletier wristed a shot past Everblades goalie Craig Kowalski. Gwinnett completed their come-back just 1:45 later on Jeff Campbell's power play goal which tied the contest at four.

The eight combined goals in the second period set an Everblades all-time franchise record for the most goals by both teams in one period, and the pair of goals scored by the 'Blades in the final 3.2 seconds of the second period also set a franchise record for the fastest two goals, breaking the previous mark of 10 seconds.

In goal, Kowalski picked up the win for the Everblades stopping 21 of 25 Gwinnett shots bringing his record to 5-4-0. Fields, who was replaced in goal at the start of the third period by Chad Collins, suffered the loss allowing the six goals on 21 shots which dropped his record to 8-3-1. Collins, who was seeing his first action of the season, stopped all seven shots he faced in the third period.

On the power play, the Everblades converted on three of their seven chances, and the Gladiators finished the night 2-for-5 with the man advantage.

With the win the Everblades are now 1-2-0 vs. Gwinnett this season.
