Penguins Hand Sound Tigers Third Straight Loss

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Jan. 7, 2011) ‚¬" Brett Sterling tallied a goal and two assists, the Penguins jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-2 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre on Friday. The Penguins improve to a league-best 29-8-0-0 with the win. The Sound Tigers drop their third straight to start the new year and fall to 18-17-1-2.

The Penguins took the lead 11:36 into the first period. Following a faceoff win in the Sound Tigers zone, Tim Wallace fired a wrist shot from the point that made its way through traffic to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 1-0 lead. Brett Sterling increased the Penguins lead five minutes later. Wallace made a clearing attempt from his own blue line that bounced its way through the Sound Tigers defense and onto Sterling's stick. Sterling skated in all alone and slid the puck through Mikko Koskinen's pads for his 11th goal of the year. Wilkes-Barre outshot the Sound Tigers 12-3 in the opening period and carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would continue to control the play as they added to their lead just 1:07 into the second. The Sound Tigers turned the puck over coming out from behind their net to and Bryan Lerg made the Sound Tigers pay for their mistake. Lerg collected the puck in the slot and backhanded it past Koskinen to make the score 3-0. With 1:06 left in the period Eric Tangradi's shot from the right circle rang off the far post and in to increase the Penguins lead to 4-0.

The Sound Tigers got on the board with just 10 seconds remaining in the second period. While the Sound Tigers were shorthanded, Anton Klementyev made a clearing pass up to Tony Romano which created a two-on-one. Romano fed Jean Bourbeau streaking to the net, and the Bonnyville, Alberta native snapped the puck past Penguins netminder John Curry. It was Bourbeau's first career AHL goal and the first of the night for the Sound Tigers as they trailed 4-1 heading to the third period.

Bridgeport cut the deficit to two midway through the third via the power play. The Sound Tigers found themselves on a five-on-three and after some quick passes from Ty Wishart and Robin Figren, Mark Katic buried a one-timer from the point to make the score 4-2 with 9:42 to go. It was Katic's second goal of the season and Wishart's first point as a Sound Tiger.

That's as close as Pat Bingham's squad would get though as Nick Johnson scored from the right circle to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 5-2 lead, and they would go on to win by that same score. John Curry earned the win in net for the Penguins for his 13th win of the year. Koskinen takes the loss and drops to 5-10-0.

The Sound Tigers return to action tomorrow evening when they play host to the Worcester Sharks at 8:00 p.m.
