MANCHESTER, NH - Tom Cavanagh, a forward for the Manchester Monarchs during the 2009-10 season and an AHL forward over parts of the past six seasons, died Thursday in Providence, Rhode Island.
He was 28.
Cavanagh was drafted by San Jose in the sixth round (182nd overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He played 286 games in the AHL with Cleveland, Worcester, Manchester and Springfield, recording one assist in five games with the Falcons earlier this season. While in Manchester during the 2009-10 season, Cavanagh collected eight points (3-58) and 10 penalty minutes in 17 games.
He remains the Worcester Sharks' franchise scoring leader with 138 points (46-92138) in 202 games.
"We are saddened by the news of Tom's passing," said Monarchs General Manager Ron Hextall in a statement. "Tom was an excellent teammate to our young squad last season and will be missed in Monarchs Country and throughout the hockey community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time."
Cavanagh recorded three points (1-23) in 18 NHL games with San Jose over two seasons (2007-09).
