Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME - Dennis McCauley and Maxime Legault each scored two goals to send the Portland Pirates to a 4-3 victory over the Manchester Monarchs in an American Hockey League game played this evening in front of 4,597 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Marc-Andre Gragnani earned two assists and five other Pirates contributed assists to the offensive effort to help Portland improve to 21-11-4-1 on the season and move within three points of the Atlantic Division lead.
Bud Holloway, Justin Azevedo, and Dwight King each scored for Manchester as they dropped to 24-14-1-1 and lost the first game this season in regulation in which they scored first (15-1-0-1).
Both teams battled back-and-forth in an intense first period that saw the Pirates take a season-high 21 shots heading into the intermission. Holloway struck first for the Monarchs, at the 1:04 mark giving them a brief lead. Portland's Legault scored his third goal in as many games to notch the game at one, only to see Manchester take the lead again on a goal by Azevedo two minutes later. McCauley tallied his sixth of the season to cap a hectic start to the first period that saw four goals in 6:43. With less than two minutes remaining in the period, Legault beat goaltender Jeff Zatkoff again for his fourth goal in the past three games to establish a 3-2 Pirates lead. In the second, Manchester's King scored on an unassisted goal to tie the game for the only score of the period. Late in the third period with 2:22 left in the game, McCauley notched the game-winner to send Portland to victory.
The Pirates out-shot Manchester 43-35 for the night and Jhonas Enroth made 32 saves for his third straight victory and seventh straight start in which Portland earned a point to improve to 12-10-1 on the season.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were 1. McCauley, 2. Legault and 3. Gragnani.
