
Falcons Host Charlotte Checkers Tonight

The Springfield Falcons and Charlotte Checkers meet for the second time this season when they drop the puck at 7 pm at the MassMutual Center on Saturday night. The Falcons and Checkers will meet three times this month with Springfield heading to Charlotte for games on January 19 and January 21.
The Falcons head into Saturday's game looking to rebound from a 4-1 loss suffered on Friday night in Portland. Prior to Friday's game, the Falcons had earned at least a point in six of seven games going 4-1-0-2 in that span including an impressive 3-1 win over the Manchester Monarchs on January 1. Springfield remains in the hunt in the Atlantic Division with a record of 16-16-1-3 good for 36 points. The Falcons are only three points behind fifth place Bridgeport and four points behind fourth place Worcester.
Charlotte heads into Springfield having defeated the Albany Devils by a score of 4-2 last night. Jerome Samson added one goal and one assist, while Brett Sutter, Chris Terry and Nicolas Blanchard also scored for Charlotte. The Checkers have a record of 21-12-1-4 good for 47 points and second place in the East Division. Charlotte is second in the Eastern Conference in goals scored with 128 and they have a mark of 12-5-1-0 on the road this year.
FALCONS NOTES - The Falcons had one of their busiest stretches of transactions this past week as three players that were on the Springfield roster last week are no longer on it, while the Falcons also welcomed a new face to the lineup.
The busy transaction week started on Tuesday with Columbus trading defenseman Nate Guenin to Anaheim in exchange for forward Trevor Smith. Smith was leading Syracuse in scoring and he made his Falcons debut on Friday night in Portland playing on a line with Tom Sestito and Mike Blunden. On Wednesday, forward Tyler Murovich was assigned to Reading of the ECHL, where he made his debut Friday night picking up one assist. On Thursday, Matt Calvert was recalled to the Columbus Blue Jackets and he made his NHL debut in Anaheim on Friday night.
Maksin Mayorov has collected a point in three of his last four games picking up two goals and one assist in that span.
Trevor Frischmon has picked up at least a point in four of his last five games totaling one goal and four assists in that stretch.
Gustaf Wesslau has stopped 61 of his last 64 shots faced in his last two games posting a save percentage of .953. Wesslau stopped 36 of 38 shots on Wednesday, December 29 against Worcester and stopped 25 of 26 shots on January 1 in a 3-1 win over Manchester.
CHECKERS NOTES - Jerome Samson is on a two game scoring streak and he also has scored a goal in three of his last four games overall. Samson has three goals in his last four games.
Jacob Micflikier has collected at least a point in nine of his last 11 games played totaling five goals and seven assists for 12 points in that stretch. Micflikier set AHL career highs in all offensive categories last year when he totaled 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points in 59 games with Albany. He currently has 33 points in 36 games this year.
