Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Albany River Rats in a shootout 4-3 Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins got shorthanded goals from Ben Walter and Zdenek Blatny and a power play goal from Eric Healey. The P-Bruins are now 25-18-1-2 on the season, 53 points and in fourth place in the Atlantic Division.
The P-Bruins got on the board first with the River Rats on the power play. Walter took the puck away from Alexander Mogilny and scored from point blank range on Albany goaltender Frank Doyle. The River Rats tied the game at one when Peter Vrana scored even strength at the 14:04 mark. The P-Bruins went into the first intermission leading by a goal when Healey scored off a rebound from a Tyler Redenbach shot. Blatny had the second assist.
The P-Bruins opened up a 3-1 lead in the second period on their second shorthanded goal of the evening. As Blatny was coming out of the box a pass from Albany's Chris Minard to the defenseman at the point went wide and the puck landed right on Blatny's stick. Blatny beat Doyle top of the net to give Providence a two goal cushion. The River Rats added a goal of their own in the second on the power play to bring the game back within one. Nicklas Bergfors scored off a rebound from a Dan McGillis shot. The P-Bruins went into the second intermission leading 3-2.
Neither team scored until there was under a minute to play in regulation and the River Rats were on the power play with Doyle pulled from net. Aleksander Suglobov put the puck in between P-Bruins netminder Jordan Sigalet and the post with 47.7 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
After neither team scored in the extra session the game headed to a shootout. The first eight shooters were kept off the board before David Clarkson scored in round five to give the River Rats a one goal lead. Walter was the fifth shooter for the P-Bruins and was stopped by Doyle to give the River Rats a 4-3 shootout victory.
Sigalet stopped 20 of 23 shots for the P-Bruins, while Doyle stopped 36 of 39 for the River Rats. The P-Bruins were 1 for 6 on the power play, while Albany was 2 for 7 on the man-advantage.
The P-Bruins hit the road Saturday, February 4 at the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:05 p.m. before returning home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday, February 5 to face the Lowell Lock Monsters at a special 2:05 p.m. start time.
