Norfolk Admirals News Release
The Admirals staved off a Senators' comeback bid despite Denis Hamel's hat trick, as the Admirals defeated Binghamton 6-4.
It took just 22 seconds for Jason Morgan to give the Admirals a lead in the opening frame. Morgan received a pass from Milan Bartovic, who had scooped up the loose puck from the corner to the left of Binghamton goaltender Kelly Guard. Morgan buried a one-timer at 0:22. An Admirals' man-advantage just over four minutes later allowed Norfolk to double its lead. A wide-open Dustin Byfuglien blasted a one-timer from the point that was deflected past Guard by Nathan Barrett at 4:56. Norfolk did not allow Binghamton its first shot until 6:02 into the first period. However, the Senators had more luck at the mid-way mark of the first as Denis Hamel tallied twice. His first goal was a power play slap shot that went past the glove of a screened Mike McKenna at 9:42. Hamel tallied three minutes later with an extra attacker following a Norfolk delayed penalty, as he skated in on McKenna two-on-one and sent another shot past the netminder's glove at 12:41. Consecutive Binghamton penalties gave Norfolk a five-on-three advantage that they cashed in on twice. Mark Cullen faked a slap shot from the point, skated toward the slot and sent a heavy wrist shot that eluded Guard for a two-man-advantage tally at 17:48. The Admirals scored again 36 seconds later with a five-on-four power play, as Danny Eberly re-directed a Matt Keith feed past Guard for his first Admirals' goal in his first Admirals' game at 18:24. The Admirals took a 4-2 lead into the locker room for the first intermission.
Norfolk extended its lead to three goals early in the second stanza, as Matt Keith scored on new netminder Billy Thompson off a pass from Pavel Vorobiev at 1:59. Binghamton pulled two within two goals with just 41 seconds remaining in the period, as Charlie Stephens scored to make the score 5-3 heading into the final frame.
Hamel completed the hat trick at midway through the third period, tallying off a partial breakaway at 6:27. However, Matt Keith sealed the Senators' fate with 27.1 seconds remaining as he tallied an empty net marker. The Admirals were victorious, 6-4.
Mike McKenna earned the win and stopped 22 of 26 shots. Kelly Guard made 16 saves on 14 shots and did not receive a decision. Billy Thompson was saddled with the loss despite only allowing one goal on 25 shots.
Norfolk was 3-10 on the power play while Binghamton was 1-6.
