Abbotsford Heat News Release
Omaha, NE - The Chicago Wolves got a shorthanded goal from Billy Tibbetts in the third period and went on to beat the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights 4-3 on Friday night at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. It was the first of two games between the teams this weekend.
The Knights weathered four early penalty kills and forged ahead on their own powerplay. Craig MacDonald steered a bouncing puck past goalie Michael Garnett for his third goal of the year. MacDonald had missed the last nine games due to an injury.
The Wolves tied the game at 1:55 of the second period when Ramzi Abid tucked in a pass from Jared Ross for his team-leading 24th goal of the year.
Chicago took its first lead of the game when Mark Popovic finished off a two-on-one rush with his 8th goal of the year.
The Knights got the goal back when Dave Moss forced the puck away from Garnett behind the goal line. The puck drifted back to the blueline where Zenith Komarniski wired a slapshot into the empty net. That tied the game at two after two.
Chicago retook the lead at 7:37 of the third period on another two-on-one. Karl Stewart hit Stephen Baby with a pass for an easy tap-in goal to make it 3-2.
Tibbetts then got the eventual game winner. He slipped out of the penalty box, took an alert pass from Travis Roche and roared in on Krahn. His backhander slipped under the Knights goalie to give the Wolves a 4-2 lead.
With a Knights powerplay still under way, the Knights responded 28 seconds later when Mark Giordano beat Garnett with a slap shot from the slot. It would be as close as the Knights would get. Moss finished with assists on all three Knights' goals.
The Knights are now 18-23-2-7. They are back in action tomorrow night when they host the Wolves again at 7:00 p.m.
Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Auditorium box office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday from noon through game time and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be purchased by calling 422-1212 or at Ticketmaster.com.
