Admirals Fall to Griffins in OT
February 3, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI- In front of a season high crowd of 7,408 the Milwaukee Admirals were just 1.4 seconds from picking up a big come-from-behind victory over Western Conference leading Grand Rapids.
Instead, the Ads suffered a tough 5-4 overtime loss after Daryl Bootland scored a 6-on-4 power play goal with 1.4 seconds remaining in the third to tie the game and Brian Helmer scored another power-play tally at the 1:24 mark of the OT session.
Shortly after Grand Rapids pulled goaltender Joey MacDonald with 1:44 remaining in favor of an extra attacker, Admirals forward Zack Stortini was whistled for a hooking penalty and give the Griffins a two-man advantage with the empty net. Just when it looked like the Ads would kill of the penalty and win the game, Bootland took a loose puck in the slot and fired it past Milwaukee goalie Pekka Rinne.
Another hooking penalty, this time on defenseman Rick Berry, at 28 seconds of overtime put the Grifs on the power play again and just under a minute later Helmer would beat Rinne and give the Griffins the 5-4 victory.
Milwaukee had never led in the game until Rich Peverley gave them a 4-3 lead when he beat MacDonald with 10:15 left to play. Berry assisted on the maker, which was Peverley's sixth of the season.
Simon Gamache, playing in his first game for the Admirals after being claimed on waivers by the Nashville Predators and sent to Milwaukee last week, tied the game at three on a power play goal 6:34 into the third.
Scottie Uphsall extended his scoring streak to nine games with a goal and an assist on the night. Rinne stopped 37 of 42 shots in the loss.
This was the second straight game that the Admirals have dropped in OT to the Griffins. Grand Rapids prevailed 3-2 in overtime on January 14 when Don MacLean scored just 35 seconds into the extra session.
The Admirals hit the road for a pair of games with the first-place Houston Aeros this Saturday and Tuesday night. The next Milwaukee home game is Friday, February 10th at 7:00 pm versus the Iowa Stars. The first 5,000 fans will receive a Cinch Sack, courtesy of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
