An All-Around Winner
The Wheeling Nailers put the wraps on the home portion of their 2014-15 regular season schedule on Friday night, doing so in the best way possible. 4,022 fans witnessed a 3-1 triumph by the Nailers, as nearly 90,000 supporters packed their way into WesBanco Arena during the campaign. After a scoreless first period, Elmira got on the board first, thanks to Mike Seidel's power play goal midway through the second stanza. Wheeling quickly answered back, as David Makowski netted the tying goal, batting in a rebound with his backhand, before Zack Torquato finished off Adam Krause's wraparound for a 2-1 Nailers lead after forty minutes. Chaz Johnson capped off the scoring in the third, as Wheeling unloaded 48 shots on the two netminders for the Jackals. Franky Palazzese made 18 saves in his 19th win of the year.
Last One for Them
The Elmira Jackals will conclude their 2014-15 season on Saturday night, entering play with a 32-32-7 record. While Elmira has seen a 15-point improvement from a year ago, postseason hockey will not be in the cards, as the Orlando Solar Bears locked up the final playoff spot in the East Division with 84 points. The Jackals had a strong start to the season, which featured a high water mark of nine games over .500 (26-17-5), however, the end of the campaign has been less than stellar, as Elmira has stumbled to the finish line with a 4-12-2 record in its last 18 games. The Jackals recently lost all four games on their North Division road trip, falling 4-1 in Fort Wayne, 4-2 in Toledo and Indy, and 3-1 in Wheeling. Mike Seidel had Friday's lone goal, while Travis Fullerton and Sam Marotta both received two decisions in goal on the trip.
Let's Do It Now
The playoff scenario for Saturday night is as direct as it has been all season for the three squads battling for fourth place in the North Division. With a 6-0 win over Fort Wayne on Friday, the Kalamazoo Wings wrapped up third place, as they have 76 points, in addition to holding the tiebreaker against Wheeling, Cincinnati, and Indy. The Nailers have control of their own destiny, needing only a win in regulation or overtime against Elmira to turn Sunday's game in Brampton into a friendly confrontation. All three clubs will finish off the regular season calendar on enemy ice, as the Cyclones are in Fort Wayne for the second time in four days, while the Fuel are in Reading for the second straight night. Indy scored with 2:44 left in regulation on Friday for a 3-2 win, while Cincinnati surrendered four unanswered goals to Toledo in a 5-2 defeat at Huntington Center.
Johnson to Join 600 Club
Chaz Johnson experienced a lot of fun memories in parts of four seasons as an Elmira Jackal, and on Saturday night, he will get to experience another while wearing a different uniform. The ten-year veteran will lace up the skates for the 600th time during regular season play in his professional career, doing so for the 127th time as a Nailer. On Friday night, Johnson netted his 30th goal in two seasons with Wheeling, giving him 162 tallies and 316 points as a pro. Chaz has also spent 1,452 minutes in the penalty box throughout his career. If the Nailers are able to reach the playoffs, it will be the eighth postseason for the Montreal, QC native. On the other end of the games played ledger, defenseman Evan Wardley made his professional debut on Friday night, and although he did not get a point, his play at the Wheeling defensive blueline helped lead to Zack Torquato's winning goal.
All-Time on the Line
Saturday night marks the 13th and final head-to-head meeting between the Nailers and Jackals this season, as well as the sixth battle between the two clubs at First Arena. While Wheeling has already wrapped up the season series with an 8-4 advantage, Saturday's winner will get to spend the entire summer in the lead of the all-time series, as both sides have collected 42 victories in the first 84 clashes. On Friday night, the Nailers put an end to a brief two-game winning streak by Elmira, coming from behind for a 3-1 win in West Virginia. Mike Seidel's goal to open the contest was his seventh in 11 games, as he leads the two sides in that department, while Derek Army and Zack Torquato both picked up a point, raising their series-leading totals to 11 each. Wheeling will look to pull even in the New York portion of the set, as the Jackals have taken three of the first five matches.
