Former Aces Defenseman John Ramage Makes NHL Debut
April 11, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Defenseman John Ramage, last suiting up for the Alaska Aces in 2013-14, became the second player this season to previously play for the Aces and advance to the National Hockey League after suiting up today for the Calgary Flames, in a 5-1 defeat to the Winnipeg Jets at MTS Centre.
Ramage, 24, joins Laurent Brossoit (Edmonton) as the two players this season, and 13 overall, to skate for the Aces and advance to make their NHL debut. Ramage recorded three shots on goal, two hits and one blocked shot, wearing #55.
The St. Louis native skated in 20 postseason games for the Aces last year, helping capture their third Kelly Cup championship in club history with 13 points (4g-9a) as the league's playoff scoring leader among blueliners. He added a goal and +1 rating in six regular season games with the Aces.
Ramage has 16 points and 123 penalty minutes in 103 career AHL games and carries 13 career games of experience (three assists and +7) with the United States in the World Junior Championships. He helped Team USA capture the Gold Medal in 2009-10 and was captain the following season when they earned the Bronze Medal.
He skated in 157 career college games with the University of Wisconsin, earning 53 points, 237 penalty minutes and a +28 rating. He was captain of the Badgers for his final two seasons and helped guide the program to a WCHA title as a 2012-13 senior when he collected a career high 20 points and +15 rating in 42 games.
Ramage was selected by Calgary in the fourth round (103rd overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
Since the Aces joined the ECHL in 2003-04, a total of 31 players have suited up in Aces and NHL colors. Current players suiting up for NHL teams, with Aces experience include Anchorage natives Scott Gomez (New Jersey), Brandon Dubinsky (Columbus) and Nate Thompson (Anaheim). Former Aces head coach Davis Payne (Los Angeles) is current in the NHL as an assistant coach, helping guide the Kings to their second Stanley Cup championship last season.
