Jackals Fall in Final Road Game, 3-1
April 11, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
WHEELING, WV - Mike Seidel opened the scoring on the power-play with his team-leading 23rd goal of the season, but the Jackals dropped their final road game of the 2014-15 season in Wheeling, 3-1.
The play of Sam Marotta and Franky Palazzese provided the early storyline through the first 20 minutes, as each netminder was perfect in the opening frame. Marotta turned aside 15 Wheeling shots and Palazzese turned aside eight Jackals' shots.
The scoreless tie lasted until the halfway mark of the second period when Mike Seidel capitalized on the man advantage for his team-leading 23rd goal of the season. Nick Tuzzolino moved the puck to Jacob MacDonald and as his shot attempt was blocked it bounced to Seidel who was in the perfect position to bury the power-play marker. Just under three minutes later the Nailers would even the score with David Makowski's eighth goal of the season. Derek Army fed Mike Slowikowski for a wrist shot that clipped Marotta, bounced off of the crossbar and laid in the crease for Makowski to tap in. The Nailers added the go-ahead tally at 16:44 of the second period as Adam Krause threw a backhand pass across the slot, which bounced off of a skate and landed on Zack Torquato's stick for his 19th goal of the season. As the second period was winding down, Jackals goaltender Sam Marotta shifted in the crease and went down to the ice with an apparent injury. He was helped off the ice and Travis Fullerton entered the game. As the buzzer sounded at the end of the period, Chaz Johnson ripped a slapshot that caught Fullerton up high and stunned the netminder.
Travis Fullerton led the Jackals onto the ice to open the third period after a bruising middle stanza. Former Jackal Chaz Johnson put the Nailers ahead 3-1 with a short-side shot at 4:54 of the period. Cody Wydo and Shane Bakker assisted Johnson's 17th goal of the season.
Sam Marotta stopped 30 of 32 shots faced in 38:59 of work and was handed the loss. Travis Fullerton turned aside 15 of 16 shots faced in 21:01 of action. Franky Palazzese stopped 18 of 19 shots faced in 59:48 for the win. Brandon Whitney made one save in 12 seconds of work. The Jackals went 1-for-5 on the power-play and the Nailers went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
